I understand and respect the decision but it isn't very practical. The captain should be a skater, it's not just symbolic but also a tool for the team when dealing with the officials. It's pretty pointless to have someone as the captain in name only. He can't even wear a C or talk to the officials so he can't even perform the on-ice duties that come with the captancy. It's basically the same situation as before now he just has a title. not very smart.

According to the article, Mitchell will be designated to do the talking to the officials stuff and Ohlund would do the ceremonial stuff like ceremonial face-offs.

I'm sitting on the fence with this one. I do think that the captaincy is a fairly important position especially with a high intensity sport like hockey; I have a feeling that there are probably some other unforeseen situations that would make things seem awkward. But from the way things are described, it sounds like the actual day-to-day on ice set-up is very close to one where it's Mitchell that's wearing the C. So it kind of begs the question of why not just give it to Mitchell anyways unless they feel that Luongo is that strong of a leader.

Lame!

Very Canuckish to name Luongo captain = LAME!!

Should of given it to Ohlund. He is good with the media and he's paid his dues. Ya, he is no Sakic, Yzerman, or even a Doan...but he's still the most worthy on this shit team.

neither ohlund or mitchell are stand outs for captains. I've felt since nazzy left that they should go on a rotating captaincy because nobody stood out.

having 3 A's with some specific duties split out is just a version of that. Besides, Luongo loves the camera and attention. No problem giving him more TV time.

They think making him the captain will help avoid him demanding a trade.
You nailed it. Thats all this move is about. What he'll do in return is finish his contract and move somewhere that'll please his wife!

Think of him? We saw him here and what did having "The Greatest Captain of All Time " get us. Exactly...nothing. In fact, we couldn't get rid of him soon enough.

Yea he only has 6 cup rings what does he know about winning.......he won 2 of them without Gretzky called game 6 against Jersey and scored what was it 3 goals??

He never brought a cup to Vancouver but really who could.....doesn't matter who's in charge of this ship whether it's an absentee cell phone millionaire or a slum lord real estate "tycoon" it's the worst run organization in hockey period......a fan becomes an owner who hires a hated agent to become the GM who nobody will make a deal with so as a result it's the no talent crew.

I'm sure that Messier couldn't get the memory of Vancouver out of his mind fast enough same as it was for the way nuck fans looked at him.....

Don't make the mistake of thinking that he can't lead....he has the resume to prove it... he's what second all time in scoring to go along with it all

In a little slice of Heaven.
Naming him captain tells me that he is much more of a leader in the dressing room than I ever thought. Either that or he won it by default because Vigneault is afraid to make a decision...

For the record I am a Vancouver fan.

Don't be such a dumb ass...try reading in context to the thread. I guess he has no help in Edmonton or NY either?
I'm talking about your comment on how "The Greatest Captain of All Time" got the canuck fans nothing....yea he had good players around him in Edm/NY no kidding, that's pretty obvious but he was also someone that got everyones attention in the dressing room to as well as on the ice.....and when he got here there was nothing even close....but that's an organizations inability to draft, trade or sign FA's for the kind of team that has leaders and a great supporting cast to go along with them .....it wouldn't matter if it was Messier, Sakic, Stevie Y, Howe or any of the great leaders/captains sitting in the Canucks dressing room there is nothing around them to work with......Luongo is Captain because there is nobody else to give it to

The Dumb Ass comment.....what are you 7

If anybody doesn't "get it" it's you, I already said leaders lead, the only reason I even addressed Messier is your "Greastest Captain of all Time" comment I took to mean that you put the Canucks inability to do anything when he was here all on his shoulders which is BS although and even Messier has said he should not have took the C especially the way it went down.

As far as Captains being overrated....that depends who your talking about do you remember Yzerman's second last playoff run he's out there on one leg and contributing, his knee was so bad (bone on bone) you think that stuff doesn't go unnoticed by teammates. Guys like Sakic who never take a night off they both lead by example so to categorize all Captains as overrated is ridiculous.

As far as watching the games....I watch them all and it's always the same thing they come out of the gate strong and as the season unfolds it's plain to see how much they are missing....it's not a sprint but a marathon...there Defence has Ohlund and please keep developing (Edler).....Bieksa?? you never know which player is going to show up

Luongo will be heading for a cup contender as soon as his contract is up and why.....Mike Gillis couldn't build a town in Lego world never mind an NHL team

But hey maybe they'll be the Florida Panthers....they made that big run when they first came in the league with a bunch of has been's and never was's amybe they'll do that....but I doubt it

Regardless of your views on captains or Messier, bringing him onto a team, automatically replacing their current captain, trading said captain, then expecting the players would "follow" a new captain who nobody has any history nor relationship with is ridiculous. Messier was brought in to fill seats for a struggling team. When Bure and Mogilny can't do that for you, a man way past his prime sure isn't going to do much either.

I'm not getting too excited yet. The Canucks have a history of young prospects kicking ass to get on the roster, then settling into mediocrity once they secure a spot.

So whatever happened to Jason King, Harold Druken and Bull Muckalt?
Bill Muckalt is from Surrey, that was a no brainer. He actually cried when he got traded. Before you feel too bad for him, it was because he knew that the NYI were the only team bad enough to give him a shot and even they were too good for him.

1) Yzerman, Sakic etc. would do that with or without a "C". So if a guy without a "C" does that same thing it wouldn't inspire the team the same way?

2) How about letting Mike Gillis have his shot before you tear him down? So far he's 5-0. Maybe if you put a "C" on him he would be more inspiring ;)

Ok ....well to start with I can agree that u and I are going to disagree:D

Yep Yzerman and Sakic would be every bit inspiring in their roles if they didn't have the "C" on their Jersey's.......but they did and as Captains did inspire their teams....their are plenty of warriors with no a's or c's on their jersey that do inspire

Mike Gillis will get his shot but 5-0 in preseason means absolutely nothing....unless your desperate for a silver lining....however if I'm totally wrong I will meet u at the Shark Club and buy you a pitcher of your fav ale.....I'm feeling pretty safe though:cool:

You really only read what you want ....which is fair enough. He may not have had Gretzky but funny enough he had how many other Hall of Famers on that Oiler team? they also had a little to do with their success. This really is a stupid discussion. Wearing the "C" means shit ;)
At the end of the day I guess we are all entitled to our own view....but to say " Wearing the C means Shit" doesn't matter who's wearing it I'd say you've never played a meaningful game of hockey in your life because a blanket statement like that makes no sense at all!!

On that note i'll miss the response I'm sure because I'm going to do some glacier sleddin up in stewardson BC area and we are leavin in a couple of hours so......"GO OILERS"
