I say it's a good choice, since the Canucks will go as far as he carries them this season.

The Vancouver Canucks have a new captain and his name is. Roberto Luongo.

"This is a tremendous honour and one that I feel very grateful for," said Luongo. "I am very proud to have been named the Captain and with the support of Mattias, Willie, Ryan and all of my teammates I look forward to leading this team."

Luongo, who is in the third year of a four-year deal with the Canucks, was named to the post on Tuesday along with alternates captains Willie Mitchell, Mattias Ohlund, Ryan Kesler.

It's a non-issue and doesn't really matter one way or the other. It's just one more thing for people to talk about but has zero to do with wins and losses. Again, non-issue.
I agreed Hubba, but I am also glad they didn't name Willie aka: "Dana Murzyn The Pylon" Mitchell captain.

I totally agree. Hockey fans make so much of who the Captain is but it's meaningless in the total scheme of things.

I'm sure someone will post that the person provides leadership etc. While that may be true in some respects, but that doesn't preclude other players from showing leadership as well.

I thought goalies weren't allowed to wear the C anymore??
I don't think it's a great choice. Kevin Beiska would have been better.
He won't actually wear the C, the alternate captains will

The choice is based on......not much in the way of alternatives.....really who would you give it to?? Mitchell can barely put two words together and who else.....nobody has done shit....let the Mascot be captain....at the end of the day leaders lead as someone has already said.......but who on that team is a leader??

There's no real other guy on the team that stands out. What's the point of arbitrarily naming a captain. Yea people are laughing at us but "it is what it is" for now :)

No one will actually where a 'C'... Kesler, Mitchell and Ohlund will only where "A's".

It's an alright chance, it is fairly not important in the grand scheme of things as many of the players can lead off the ice, which is what is the most important aspect. In the end, as long as any Canucks payer is lifting the Stanley Cup, I'd be as happy as I am after spending some time with a few of my favourite girls.

I don't like it.

Is Luongo going skate all the way to the opposing zone (or center even) to argue a call when no other letters are on the ice? (or going to the box)

Sure, he leads the team by saving it's poor, non-offensive, non-productive ass every game on ice. I don't know what he's like off ice. Can he be a pillar of strength for the team even though he's being bombarded with 30-40 shots a night? Can he take the criticism for the team and help them alleviate the pressure?

I don't like my goalie bitching at me, especially when he doesn't make a save he should. Which is another point. Luongo has an off-night. Let's sit the captain and bring in the backup. The other team just chased your leader to the bench to think about his shit play in a puddle of his own sweat.

I'd like to see a player tell the captain it's OK when a sniper roofs one on him.

I could live with Mitchell with a C on his sweater. I'd much rather have the Sedins or Ohlund, even Kesler. They're all draft picks and they've developed into the players that they are in Vancouver. (yes, Naslund wasn't a draft pick, but he made his name here. Don't even talk to me about Messier)

Come to think of it, you probably get a lot more enjoyment and entertainment from your favorite girls, than you do from the Canucks. It's cheaper to see your girls and you know you will leave with a smile on your face :)
You might even get a couple of shots on goal!

I have a share in seasons tickets in the club seats. To be honest, I just love watching the game. It's great when the Canucks win, but as long as it's an exciting game, I'm there

HB40 , you're on your game tonight ;)
GO! OILERS! GO!

Not being a Canuck fan myself...I think it's cool Luongo's the captain. It's a lot of pressure and responsibility he has to try and not only rally his teammates but all the fans. If he does his job of stopping pucks the captaincy should come pretty easy. But I think he has the leadership and perserverance to carry the team through the slumps. Just my opinion. :)

captaincy means nothing really.
Its a figure head position these days.

The main duty is to take ceremonial faceoffs.

Funny we have a guy who can't do that

Not true. To the players it means a lot! To the captains, it can make or break a career!

Trevor Linden, drafted #2 overall, touted in '85 as a possible "Next one". Starts out great, throws hits like a truck. Puts on the "C" and flatlines to a mediocre player that throws a hit every 16 games. For many players the C has stood for CANCER. For others, Competency and for some, Careers.

Pronger, Iginla, Sakic, Brind'Amour, Nash, Guerin, Doan, Lecavalier !!!

I'd like to see you tell that to any one of these captains!
They've all paid their dues, proven themselves and earned their position.
Have you ever been in a locker room?

And ceremonial face offs? You guys got it locked up! He's not going to lose very many with that stick.
