So I lost my passport a while back....

I am getting it replaced, BUT, I need to get this declaration signed by a notory or a lawyer or 'another person of authority' whatever that means...
So I have the whole form filled out. How much will it cost to get it signed?

by a lawyer?
by a notory?
by another 'authority figure'? wtf would another authority figure be?

The person doesn't need to know me for x amout of years

I had to do it once. I forget the exact fee, but it was under $100. Notaries are generally cheaper. Go to a mall type operation as they usually have these guys on stand by. Take 2 pieces of gov't ID too.

Lawyers will cost more and might take a while to book an apointment if you find one willing to 'waste' their time on such a small thing.

They list who can sign the application verifying your identity. There are lots of people who can do it other than a lawyer or a notary public, who won't charge you a thing. They just have to have known you for the past 2 years.

I don't think she is talking about the passport application itself. I think she is talking about the document she needs to be notarized that says she lost her old passport and no longer has it in her possesion. Only a notary or lawyer can sighn off on this and they will apply thier seal to it.

for the application part, it is an offence to charge money to sign it.

Do you have a regular lawyer? Mine just notarized things for me probably a few times a year no charge.

You could also try the court house. They usually will have a notary public or two available (or at least they do in Alberta).

For the application itself you need someone with a professional designation, or title the ones I remember are:

Lawyer
Notary
Doctor
Engineer
Architect
MP
MLA
Ambassador (Canadian)

For the paper where you are swearing that your passport was lost or destroyed, it has to be a notary, lawyer, ambassador (Canadian) or judge.

At least that's how I remember it.

Normally I do not think that you have to pay a fee for passport declarations.

I just went through my passport renewal earlier this week.

AFAIK, nothing needs to be notarized if you have original documents that prove your Canadian citizenship.

I used my birth certificate. If you are a naturalized canadian, then instead of a birth certificate, you use your citizenship card. This document must be original.

My guarantor (aka person of authority) was my dentist.

I also used my driver's license to support my application (if it is a mail-in application this can be a photocopy [front and back] as long as my guarantor signed it as well).

Word of advice:

If you send your application in by mail, it will take several months to process, and they will have your citizenship documents during that time.

If you drop off your application at the passport office yourself, you can keep your citizenship documents and you will receive your passport in the mail in 3-6 weeks...... but the line ups in the office can be anywhere from 3-6 hours long, depending on which office you visit.

The downtown Vancouver passport office is the busiest. If you are not there by 11 AM, you might not be processed the same day. I was there at 5:45 AM Monday morning and there were 150 people lined up outside the office.

I understand the Richmond office is much less busy.

Mind you, my situation was for renewing/applying... yours is replacing a lost passport.

I've had to replace a lost passport as well - a notary or lawyer's signature are required to verify that you are replacing a lost passport, and not one that was sold or otherwise given away. The passport office doesn't treat it lightly; I was also told to report it with police as well.

Here is what Passport Canada says about replacing lost passports:

Lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible passport

A Canadian passport is a valuable document that should be kept in a safe place at all times. Once a passport has been reported lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and is not to be used for any travel. This is to ensure that it is not used for fraudulent purposes. Passport Canada, Canada or any representative of the Canadian Government cannot be held responsible for any difficulties at border crossings if you attempt to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Reporting the loss or theft of a passport

As soon as a passport is believed to be lost or stolen, the bearer is required to report the circumstances of the loss or theft to:

the local police, and
Passport Canada.

Damaged passport
If a passport is damaged in any way, there could be significant delays at border crossings of other countries. To avoid such incidents, Passport Canada recommends that anyone with a damaged passport apply for a new one.

Reporting a found passport

A found passport should be reported immediately to the police and to Passport Canada and returned to Passport Canada.

If an individual finds his or her passport, which had previously been reported lost, he or she must immediately advise Passport Canada or the nearest Canadian Government office abroad, and return the found passport.

Replacing a lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible passport

The request for a replacement passport can be made in Canada at any Passport Canada Office or at the nearest Canadian Government office abroad. However, before the document can be replaced, Canadian authorities will conduct an investigation into the circumstances. This may lead to delays in processing the replacement passport.

A replacement passport (which may be valid for a limited period only) may be authorized, provided strict requirements are met. These include the submission of:

a completed application form,
two identical current passport photos,
the appropriate fee,
documentary proof of Canadian citizenship, and
a "Statutory Declaration concerning a lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible Canadian passport" (PPTC 203) if the passport is still valid.
