Never... Ever buy from a pet store!!!

90% of pet stores support puppy mills (and cat mills)... they are evil, evil people wilth evil intentions!

And sorry to say Carlotta but I don't hold much hope for the SPCA anymore! (yes I used to support them)

Never Ever buy from a Pet Store? Because 90% support puppy mills!?

Shouldn't your advice be, if you want to buy from a pet store, make sure you do a little research first. Ask questions, check around... and find one of those 10% who are good, honest people who genuinely care for animals, and want to help you have the best experience with your pet.

Supporting the good pet stores is very important. Doing things right costs more money, and they need your help to stay in business against the juggernaut of big box behemoth stores with giant advertising budgets. The independent pet shop is still your best bet for good advice and quality products that meet the needs of your pets.

The reason the SPCA can't get the Animal Advocates website shut down is, although a lot of the stuff is inflamatory it is all true and the SPCA has been incredibly negligent in its duties. The individual workers are dedicated I have no doubt, but like any bureaucratic agency it has become top heavy and their efforts and donation money often goes on high level staff and publicity.

timec: I agree that AAS has some problems but they still have my support until the SPCA can fix the problems! There are many shelters that are no longer SPCA controlled that can show the SPCA how to do things right.

rubintugger: Considering that my grandmother and aunt both had "family pet shops" while I was growing up... I support independent shops before the big box stores.

When I walk into a store that does sell cats or dogs the first thing I ask is where they come from and what's their pedigree... if the answer wrong, I leave and they don't get my money! (usually after making my way to the pet section and mumbling something about how sad puppy mills are (loud enough for those around to hear) and how inhumane it is to support a shop that sells mill animals.

For the indie pet shops: Perhaps they should put out a sign that announces they don't support puppy or cat mills? Hmmm perhaps since there's such a large group of animal lovers here, I should put up a list on my site of mill unfrienly stores on my site?

at least a store like petcetra stocks pets that they get from the spca ... it doesn't matter about the 'breeding' of the pet, there is nothing worse than seeing a 6 week old kitten behind bars for the holiday season!!!

with ALL the homeless animals out there, what is the use of putting a defenseless kitten in the hands of some ritalin freak for christmas!

i have no problem with confronting ignorant pet store owner's about such stupid and inhumane policies and practices!
