With phone cards, your minutes will be debited based on the country you are calling, and sometimes depending on whether the call is to a cell phone or a land line. Some cards expire after a fixed length of time. Get the $5 card unless you are using it frequently. The longer your individual calls are, the cheaper the minute rate is. If you make a lot of short individual calls, you'll find the total minutes run out fast. The end result is your total minutes can range from a half-hour all the way up to two hours, depending how you use it. All cards use this formula, more or less.

When I was out in Windsor and always calling home to Calgary, I was buying a phone card called, Global. No activation fees and it was .1 cent a minute and at $5.00 a card it gave me like 750 minutes, I could go on for hours...LOL

If you have a VOIP phone such as Shaw Digital Phone www.shaw.ca or Dolpintel www.dolphintel.com you can take your adapter whever you go, and it will be like taking your Vancouver number to Toronto and no charges its the same as a local call.
When I get my trip back home later this month, my adapter will be with me, and my laptop, all you need is a high speed connection and I will be able to make calls as if I was still in Surrey

I have Shaw phone and it is nice having everywhere in North America being a local call for $55/month with all the bells and whistles.
No itemized billing, no time limits and no inbound collect calls.
No telus land line for me.
