Actually, it isn't about "charity" at all. They aren't asking for donations -- there are no call numbers --- the organizers are asking that people in G8 countries to be politically responsible and ask their leaders to structure debt relief and aid packages in a way that will help end extreme poverty in Africa.hifisex said:Not going to waste my time. Probably cost ya a few bucks a year. They should just continue to starve to death. No's 1 & 2 means more money out of my pocket in the form of taxes so forced charity.
I agree that this is indeed true. but it is also true in the third world as well where one does not get to talk about the "first few years" but is instead reduced to talking about the first few days or weeks of a child's life.LonelyGhost said:. why should i pay MORE taxes so that someone in a third world country is better off and can go to work for the multinationals that have just moved more jobs 'off-shore' and put many Canadians and Americans out of work and into poverty???
more than one study has shown that by simply providing good nutrition in the first few years of a child's life will reap greater benefits in terms of intelligence, phyical and mental health and will save the health care system millions of dollars!!!
If Bono or Geldof or Madonna want to end poverty in the 3rd World, they should not be focusing on G8 leaders or asking for handouts. They should confront the corrupt kleptocracies that pass for governments in Africa. The Africans themselves, given political and economic freedom will solve their own problems far better than any washed up musician. The fact of the matter is that Africa is rich in resources, and once the people there have the same opportunities we take for granted, they will break free of poverty.luckydog71 said:What sane person would not support ending poverty in the world? So the discussion is not over if we do it, the discussion is how do we do it?
Then we get these musician and Hollywood types who believe that their fame has somehow bestowed this incredible wisdom upon them and they know how to solve world povertry. Let me call bull shit.
These multi-millionaires standing on stage tell me I should pay more taxes and forgive the debts so we can end poverty. GIVE ME A BREAK.
We have poured billions and billions of dollars into third world countries. It makes the Iraq oil for food program look like a cool-aid stand. We still have poverty levels equal to or greater than what we did when they ran the 1988 concert.
The only program that I think will work will be one that deals directly with those suffering. We need to by pass the Sadam’s of the world, but none of those leaders would ever allow that to happen.
So Geldoff (or what ever the F*** his name is) can get up every 7 or 8 years and have is Live aid event, but all that does is make those who participate FEEL better for participating. It does not solve a thing.

And how, pray tell, would they be able to do such a thing without the support of the rest of the free world and the leaders of the G8. And from what I can tell that is what they are asking for.
They are also asking for fair/free trade agreements like you suggested and the reason they did not ask for cash this time around is becuase they are aware of the corruption that is inherent in many African governments.
It is only by lobbying and pressuring the countries of the world that carry the big sticks that the confrontation with the corrupt kleptocracies can occur. I know that rock stars have big egos but even they are smart enough to realize that they don't, by themselves, have the power to change the policies of despots like Mugabee.
