Lessons From COVID

It has been a while since I last posted, and I was thinking about the lessons I have learned through this pandemic. I think most people would say they have learned 1 or 2 lessons from the pandemic. I read a quote the other day that said, "nothing worse than wasting a crisis." I don't want to waste this crisis I have experienced, nor do I want to repeat it, although I believe this will happen again in my lifetime (I am 55). Here are the two lessons I have learned.

1) Slowing down is good. I didn't know I needed it, but there was a time during this pandemic that I had nothing extra to do. No extra early morning meetings, no late evening meetings, no weekend gatherings. At first, it sucked, but as it went on, I embraced it took a deep breath and thought, "When was the last time expectations were off the table and doing nothing was ok?"
2) Patience was something I needed to grow. I consider myself a pretty patient fellow, but this pandemic revealed I had areas that needed to work. As frustration mounted everything, a new regulation hit and I was required to do something or not do something. I could feel the tension rising. This, in turn, seem to cause me to become upset a little faster at the people around me. They seem to take longer to park a car or check out at the grocery store. I couldn't read people's expressions, and I didn't know if they were upset with me or not. Was that person behind the counter having a good day? I couldn't tell, and this just added to the frustration and the lack of patience. Once I identified this, I then set to work on relaxing, giving people space and time. As well, to recognize we are all in the same boat.

So do I want to repeat this pandemic? Hell no! but I also don't want to waste the opportunity to learn, change and grow from it.

What have you learned!

I learned that I love to dance

I dont know how and never had any urges to do so, but being trapped in the house with nothing to do but dance made me realize that I love it

also not to take advantage of opportunities, you never know if it will be available to you later

I’ve learned that if I don’t have time to wait in a long line up of customers…..coughing vigorously will put you near the front of the line, just to get rid of your plague infected ass.

1. Toilet Paper, when it becomes a scarce commodity, scares the shit out of people

2.Our government and health officer are reactive pussies that don’t have the balls to keep us safe, until it’s too late, and the shit hits the fan. Then they treat us like kids

3.Staying home more often is a viable option. What am I wanting to get away from?

4. Solitude is healthy.

5. Masks are good. Good masks are better. My neighbour is a conspiracy theorist, and his overconfident red neck swagger didn’t keep him out of the ICU after his lungs got all fucked up.

6. The economy is more resilient to a global pandemic than expected. The main thing that spins out of control is government bailout programs

7.Vancouver real estate will never be cheap

8. Monoclonal antibody therapies could have drastically reduced mortality, but sat on the shelves while people died. Will we thumb our noses at a cure for the common cold? People are sheep, the media really are a problem, social media is a really really bad source of information

9. Covid is like trying to date a bylaw officer. Lots of whitty rhetoric, and then the variants take you out.

10. Big Pharma is not evil. They saved our asses and propped up our pension plans. Thank you mega-corps for curing this death spore.

Well, I learned that I don't need Vancouver. Haven't been near the city since February 2020.

re 5. Masks, handwashing maybe just staying away from people in general - have not had a cold, flu any illness whatever since Dec 2019.
re 8. By April 2020 the team I was working with at UBC/VGH had a nasal spray with AB's specific to SARS2 would give about 6 hours of 99.99% protection against the virus. Still not approved.

What I learned:
-Big Pharma big propaganda of" It takes billions of dollars and years to do research" is bullshit.
-Any lesson learnt today because of covid, will be forgotten in 3 years.
-Any suggestion to improve failures during covid will never be implemented.
-Cancer will not ever be beaten as long as there is money to be made during research, which is why its still stuck in the research mode.
-Human beings will continue to fuck up this planet, and still insist they are saving it. Kinda like a religion when it tries to recruit you.
-The old age homes will be just as susceptible to any disease ramping through them. In other words nothing will be done to improve care homes.
-An old one... They who whine the most get the most.
-If you are dead, why worry? Maybe worry about the people still alive.
-There are alot of bleeding hearts out there who are sustained by social media crap. Because Jesus, Canadians can't put a roof and feed every single poor Canadian in this country. But really they just need to get on in life. Move forward and not whine about the past. Cause you can't do anything about the past, but you can do shit about the present and effect the future.
