Hi All,

Quick question. I know that the legal age of consent in Canada is 16 (still too young IMO should be 18). But does that mean that a middle aged man is free to have sex with 16 and 17 year old girls? That doesn't seem right.

Anyone know the deal?

As long as you're not purchasing sex from that 17 or 18 year old AND/OR as long as you're not in a position of trust with that teen, you should be fine, legally.

However, if I was her father, I'd chop your nuts off!:D

In the scenario you raise, yes, both parties can legally consent to sex with each other.

Keep in mind this would hardly ever happen anyway - I have never known a 16 or 17 year old person who was sexually involved with a middle aged person. Obviously it happens, I just don't think it's as common as choosing a partner of a similar age.

So is there a particular reason for your concern?

It was a topic that came up in converstion last night. Just one of those random "did you know" topics. I was shocked that the law would be that wide open. At 16 or 17 you're still a child IMHO.
