Okay i am thinking of getting into the 2010's and buy a new TV. I have a 32inch Sony that has been great but it is time to upgrade. Thinking of something in the 50inch range, and the room can get bright due to the Sun. What do you guys and gals think ? I am sort of leaning towards the LED but is it worth spending the extra $.

Those plasma screens are very reflective in a sunny room. My plasma (Panasonic) has an anti-reflective (stronger than anti-glare) coating but it does make the picture duller. I think for that reason Panasonic stopped making that one.
Don't know anything about LED's and little about LCD's. A few years ago the plasmas had a better picture I think. Not sure about these days.

If you tune each set from someone who knows what they are doing the difference is so small that it just comes down to brightness, I prefer Plasma cause for the price of a 55 LED you can get a 65 plasma. I have a 58 and now its too small already and only had it one year.

LED if you can afford to splurge. Brighter picture and less energy consumption. Hold off on 3D technology as glasses are cumbersome and some people report having headaches. Wait until the glasses-free options hit the market and the prices are reasonable for your 2nd purchase.

I would wait on LED probably within a year or so the prices will be in line with other competiting technology.

I would suggest LCD especially if you do a lot of gaming. Less motion jittering issues and I believe they have better viewing angles as well versus plasma.

Well this is the info I was told/researched when I bought my big screen recently.
You do realize that LCD and LED are the same thing except for the back lighting don't you?

really? I thought they were much different due to the LED being unusually thin... Now I'm all confused!
They are thinner and they use less power, but they are essentially an upgraded LCD with a different type of back lightning.

These comments were taken directly off post #5 which is Wilde's reference to TV's.

" LED-backlit LCD (40 HDTVs, starting at $1,299.99) Also known as simply 'LED TVs,' they use less power and some have better picture quality than standard LCDs. Some are also very thin. Limited viewing angles compared to plasma. "

I would go with a larger LCD vs a smaller LED....I own a plasma screen and I am happy with it...last tv I bought was a 32 inch sony flatscreen tube in 2005...upgraded to the plasma in 2008 as the price of $1000 for a 46 inch widescreen was just too good to pass up....to the OP...be extra happy you were not one of those guys that bought a 27 inch plasma screen way back when they first came out and cost over 20 grand ;)

I would get the LCD, not worth spending the extra bucks on a LED. It's only the back lighting that is essentially different. Save the money and get a HD box or a PVR. This technology stuff comes down in price pretty quick. Unless you got money to burn then wait for OLED. 3D is something I don't know much about and I can't comment on that.

Just get the biggest screen you can afford, cause 90% of people out there within months say their HDTV is too small. You cant lose with any of the three.
