I need to learn French. I know the best way is to find a French gf. But if I can find one, I think I'd learn something else from her... ;-)

Anyone recommend a good audio tape/CD?

Thanks.

Having a french girlfriend didn't help me, because she wasn't very tolerable of my poor french. So we spoke english.

I didn't really start to learn french until i went to France. Of course i can't hardly speak a lick of it today. --- Kev

I disagree adventure unless hk9999 is planning on going to Quebec, then it might be better to learn the French that is spoken there.

When i was in France all i heard is how those from France can't understand those from Quebec. Quebec use to many old school words that have been dropped from the language used in France. Making it very difficult to communicate amongst each other.

So i would encourage hk9999 to learn the French that is spoken in France because its more universal, however if he is planning on going to Quebec (and only Quebec) then learn what is spoken there. Salut --- Kev

First off adventure i have spent alot of time in France. It is not one person in France or a minority, but the majority in France think that the french spoken in Quebec is poor. I fully agree when you say the french in Quebec being the purest to the original french language of many years ago. But thats also its downfall because language evolves, and the language in Quebec has remained stagnent.

I also know what you mean when you speak of "what differences i don't see any." I went to UBC for a few months to learn french and what i learned is through the schools everyone learns the same french no matter were you are from. The differences i see is the slang that is used through out the various regions. Those that are educated in Quebec will not have a problem speaking with someone from France, but those that live in a small community will probably have a hard time communicating with someone from France or any of the other french colonies, and vice versa.

On one of my trips to France i met a young man who was born in Quebec, but living out west for a few years. He was making his first trip to France. We were speaking on the plane about language and so on. This young fellow was so happy that he would be able to communicate with those in France in there own native tongue. I warned him that those in France can be fickle and may not approve of his version of French. He to didn't know what i was talking about. Well we arrived in De Gaule Airport and took the short bus ride to the train station. He was right in front of me when he stepped up to the ticket both and asked in french for a ticket.............before he could finish the person in the booth asked him in english "sir do you speak english" at which point the young man said "yes i do." From that point forward they spoke english. I can tell you this ticket attendant did not want to here this young mans version of french. The French can be really arrogant.

Another small scenerio was someone from Quebec saying that he was french. The question from an aquaintance in France was "oh what part of France are you from?" In which this fellow said 'i am not from France but from Quebec." Well then you're not French are you, but Canadain?" That was the responce from someone who was French. Born in France that is.

We could go on and on, but that would only insight (or is it insite?) others to add there two cents and the next thing we have another flame war. The MODs don't need that.

Reply to this adventure, if you wish, i'll read it but not respond. If you want to discuss further lets do it by PM. Cheers --- Kev

These two guys meet after not having seen each other for many, many years. First guy asks the second guy, "How have things been going?"

The second guy speaking very slowly tells the first guy, "I w..a..s a..l..m..o..s..t m..a..r..r..i..e..d."
The first guy says in amazement, "Hey, you don't stutter any more."

The answer comes, "Y...e...s, I w...e...n...t t...o a d...o...c...t...o...r a…n…d h…e t…o…l…d m...e t...h...a...t i...f I s...p...e...a...k s...l...o…w...l...y, I w...i…l...l n...o...t s...t...u…t...t...e...r."

The first friend congratulates him and then asks again about how he was almost married.

"W...e...l...l, m...y f...i...a...n...c...e...e a...n...d I w...e...r...e s...i...t...t...i...n...g o...n h...e...r p...o...r...c...h a...n...d t...h...e d...o...g w...a...s s...c...r...a...t...c..h...i...n...g h...i...s b...a...c...k a…n...d I t...o...l…d h...e...r t...h…a…t w...h...e...n w...e a…r…e m...a...r...r...i...e...d, s...h...e c...a...n d…o t...h...a...t f...o...r m...e a...n...d s...h...e t...h...r...e...w t...h...e r…i...n...g i...n m...y f...a...c…e.."

"Why would she throw the ring in your face for that?" asks the first friend.

" W...e...l...l, I s...p...e...a...k s...o s…l...o...w...l...y, t…h...a...t b...y t...h...e t…i…m...e s...h...e l...o...o...k...e...d a...t t...h...e d...o...g, h...e w...a…s l...i...c...k...i...n...g h...i...s b...a...l...l...s."

Not if you are a Leafs fan

Its okay if anyone else wants to jump on the bandwagon now that they are #1 overall

The Leafs number #1 Pigs can fly, and hell has frozen over.

Actually i saw them play and i do have to admit they are playing well. Its just going to be a pity when they start losing again, and those Leaf fans will want to jump off the bandwagon. :p --- Kev
