I went to LCB this afternoon to pick up a few beers and noticed a table of whiskey, Tequila, Gin and Bourbons that I’ve never seen before. They were giving out catalogs that are very professionally done showing the whole offerings for the LCB 2024 releases.

I checked out the single malt scotch bottles and noted a few I’ve never heard of but one came with Gold Medal winner from the San Francisco event called Kavalan Single Malt. Got home and read the fine print and it’s made in Taiwan. Poured a dram and I can see why it won a gold medal. At $114 a bottle it’s one I’d say is a very good bargain.

Of course the big boys like a Macallan 78 Year old is in the catalog too but at $140,000 is not for me but for some it would go well on your bar.

cheers

Premium Spirit Release happens twice a year in the spring and fall. Fall is the big one. Lots of Youtube videos on whisky reviews.

I woke up early on November 16 and bought a bottle of Blanton's and 2 bottles of Eagle Rare because they are classified as special releases. The Blanton's is a ripoff in B.C. at $109 plus taxes vs $75 all in in Ontario, but it's popular because it was in the John Wick movies. Eagle Rare was a double gold San Fran winner, and relatively good value for money at $70 plus taxes. Also bought a bottle of Ichiro's World Whisky because I haven't seen it here in a few years. Some crazy people started lining up at 0200 in the morning at the Cambie Store.

The Kavalan is underrated because it's not from one of the big 5 whisky producing countries and doesn't have an elaborate story behind it stretching back decades that may or may not be true. The whisky nerds know what it is though. I thought about buying it, but I don't even drink. I give them away as gifts to people who really help me out or resell to guys at the purchase price to the whisky nerds I work with who don't have the time to stand in line. 7 out of 10 people drink. They never go down in value and don't go bad. I was also looking at the Old Forrester 1910 which I've never seen before, but I already spent $400, so that's enough until the next spirit release.

If you want any, hurry before the junkies break into the case and steal them. That's not conjecture; it happens every year.

I still have a few bottles of:
J.P. Wiser’s Union 52 « The Rum Howler Blog that I raced to grab at the Cambie LCB store around Christmas 2017 if I recall it correctly.
May have been the one best ever premium spirits purchase I ever made. For whatever reason, BC LCB got almost all the very limited number of cases. I recall reading about it on my Globe and Mail app on my phone, called the Cambie store right away, they said yeah we have it, and I booted it straight there to get a case. ~$70 a bottle I recall.
Just really lucky ...
