I had my eyes operated on in 2004. It cost me $3,000 but they have interest free financing for 6 months, which I took advantage of. I went to London Place Eye Centre. My eyes were pretty bad -8.00 on the one eye and almost as bad on the other. But this wasn't their biggest concern. Their biggest concern, which prevented me from having eye surgery in the past was that my pupils are too big. Apparently this increases the likihood of refraction of light at night. I have to say it's the best $3,000 I've ever spent. It allowed me to go to the caribbean with my family and enjoy hours upon hours with my young daughter in the water.

The alternative would have been to have to have worn glasses or to simply swim around blindly, as contacts in water don't work worth a damn. So the benefits were priceless. Much of the cost of this service is the result of all the follow up consultations, which were numerous, (7-8). I wouldn't say my eyes are perfect, they things do get a little blurry after 8-9 hours on a computer and I can see better with both eyes than I can individually with either, but for someone like myself who wore glasses for some 35 years it was damn near a miracle.

Has anyone had any side effects from the surgery, and if so, how bad and what were they? Is it still better than contacts/glasses? My eyesite is pretty bad, and i was going to start looking at this to get rid of my glasses. Also, what are the longer term effects?

i had a few side effects i guess. I bought one of those laser pointers from a dollar store and pointed the beam directly at my cornea for 2 days. it was pretty fun at the time but i definately dont have 20/20 vision now. In fact, far from it. But if you really want i can do it for ya, for like say, 60 bucks?

Side Effects

For a short period of time (a few months) after my surgery I had halos around lights at night (such as car headlights). While this was mildy annoying, it certainly was not overly distracting or limiting. Now, 2 years on, no side effects to speak of.

My optometrist suggested that I go for surgery as I am a great candidate for it.

One issue they told me is that eventually people who have done laser will have to wear glasses in their older years.

I would like to hear from people who got them done 10 - 15 years ago when this procedure first started.

The reason you'll have to wear glasses when you get older is for reading. But this applies to many who have had 20/20 all their lives but as they hit there 40s or older the muscles in the eye begin to deteriorate and they can't focus like they use to. Laser eye surgery doesn't correct this problem.

I had my eyes done this year and it was one of the risks that you would need reading glasses earlier on. But there is a new surgery coming out to fix that too. I believe trials are in england. They zap around the cornea which creates a more pronounced concave shape to the cornea. Should be out and fine tuned by the time I would have the need for reading glasses.
