It used to work I've done it before it was useful at the older hotels to avoid getting a shitty room. You didn't get upgraded to a suite most of the time but they'd give you a nicer room with a strip view but now most places charge extra for strip views so its pretty much a thing of the past. I've gone down with groups of people before and they'd end up with a room on the 4th floor looking at the air conditioning units and i'd be on the top floor with a fantastic strip view. Last time I tried it was at the Sahara 3 years ago

Stayed in the Luxor once- never again. First they gave us a dirty room, took them 2 hours to move us into another dumpy but clean room in the far corner where you have to walk for three days to get to an elevator. (We stayes in the pyramid.)

Liked Excalibur- tram to Luxor and Mandaly, brideg to NY,NY and another bridge from NY,NY to MGM. Inexpensive and clean.

That's why I like Bill's (formerly the El Dorado). Its a small hotel with a small casino on the ground floor - so you can be on the street in 30 seconds instead of half an hour.

I couldn't stay at the Excalibur...so tacky and old...Luxor was very clean, both times I stayed there...

Right now I am leaning towards the PH Towers. 4 nights and airfare and +700 sq foot root with jacccuzi, 100 inch screen etc...for just over $600.

I have stayed in most of them at one time or another. My thoughts, from one end to the other. Mandalay Bay, nice, but the middle of nowhere and the table limits are insane, especially on weekends. Too far away. Luxor - Shithole, pure and simple, but it's cheap. Excalibur - same story as luxor. Trop, see luxor. Hooters, not even worth mentioning. MGM, not bad, if you stay in the Sigature or a suite. New York New York, marginally better than Luxor, but still pretty lousy. Monte Carlo, about the same as NYNY, but not as tacky. New ones: Vdara, Aria, Cosmopolitan, all new which is nice and if you have the email deals, the prices are not too high. I liked Aria the best of the 3, mostly because I was comped there, so take that into account. PH, much better now that it used to be, again only the tower is worth it tho. Paris - tacky and overpriced for what you get. Bellagio, tired and overpriced. Caesars, classic, but too pricey for the value. Same as the luxor, but in a much better location. Flamingo - 1978, awesome. Today, tired. Mirage, so tired. TI, they have tried to update it, but it's like they slapped some paint on it and upped the prices 50%. Venetian/Palazzo, very nice, if you can get the rate down. Wynn/Encore - same as the Mandalay, but on the other end.

Off strip, the hard rock is a decent choice if the rooms is near free. Rio, same thing. Palms is the next on my list, if only for the playboy connection.

There are a few I didn't mention, the Strat, Harrah's, Imperial etc, that's because you should never stay there, even if it's free.

Downtown is not worth the effort. Go see the light show, get the hell back to the strip before you get mugged. Whereever you go, get on as many of the hotel email promos as you can. My last trip, I had 2 nights free at Caesars before I even got there, and then I got the other night comped after being on the tables for about 4 hours. 4 nights and airfare aint bad for 600. The goal in my experience is to try to keep your daily nut to $100 or less, leaving more money for gambling, strippers and ladies.
Luxor a shithole? Compared to what hotel in Vancouver? I would say Vancouver hotels are a shithole in comparison to Vegas...

Rancid, great feedback, but you seem very critical of Vegas Hotels to say the least...
First off, they charge basically next to nothing compared to Vancouver....tons of things to see and do...some of it free! Great environments and Amazing food...etc etc...

I can and do sometimes stay even in the low end, at $20 a night sometimes they are too good to pass up. The room needs to be clean and the sink and shitter work and I am happy. Who cares what view you have. Admittedly, it is a nice treat to have a great room, but I am not there to sleep.
Exactly. I agree with ITB's comment about what you can get in Vancouver compared to Vegas, valuewise. As a matter of fact, it's next to impossible to get anything in any town in BC for less than 50-60 bucks a night. Quite decent digs are to be found in Vegas for 20 bucks a night, with a little bit of looking.

I splurged once for a mini suite at the Venetian for one night for about $100, just to see how the other half lives. It was nice, but I'm just as happy at the El Cortez.

What do you guys think of Reno, I like it more than Vegas cause no traffic, herds, and feels so relaxing. Like a senior citizens town.

With the exception of Excalibur, I've found the strip hotels that I've stayed in over the years all to be perfectly fine; in order of preference: Wynn-Encore, Caesars, Mirage, Flamingo, Harrahs and Rio. Having said that Flamingo and Mirage was 12 years ago so I don't know how well they have aged. Rio was nice enough but not close to the strip so you need to use their free shuttle service. And if you like buffets, the Wynn-Encore buffet is killer!

I typically look for the best value deal in a mainstream hotel directly on my favorite section of the strip, namely between Hard Rock and Wynn-Encore i.e. I consider price in relation to the quality of the hotel. Harrahs is smack in the middle and tends to win out on price but the fancier hotels sometimes have irresistible deals. I don't gamble so the room quality is my main criteria, along with the hotel location and outdoor pool facilities (which incidentally i would score Harrahs lowest in my list).

I haven't been to Reno in years, but, yeah, I get the impression it's a little like being in a time warp: Vegas thirty years ago, with lots of the same old names (Circus Circus, etc).

There certainly is some appeal to it there were different tribute bands playing last time I was there with the ceiling playing it was fun but I wouldn't stay downtown. It depends what you're going down for if its to enjoy the room and amenities then go for the higher end hotels but if you like to gamble be aware these places will have tables with very high minimums most of the time. I found the Aria a good combination as it is a short walk to the Monte Carlo casino

THanks for the support. I go to vegas about 6 times a year. You asked about the hotels, I gave my opinion, focused mostly on the cost for what you get. The point should be about any hotel room in vegas, its a room. If you spend more than 5 or 6 hours a night in it, asleep, you are there too much. I dont even turn the tv on when I am there. I crash, I shower, I leave. The room needs to be clean, and cheap. Nowhere did I compare them to Vancouver. In order, the best to the worst in my view: Top Tier: Venetian/Caesars/Bellagio/Vdara/Aria/Cosmo/PH/wynn/Mandalay. Middle tier: MGM/Paris/TI/Mirage/Monte Carlo/Ballys/NYNY Low End: Rio/Flamingo/Harrahs/Luxor

I can and do sometimes stay even in the low end, at $20 a night sometimes they are too good to pass up. The room needs to be clean and the sink and shitter work and I am happy. Who cares what view you have. Admittedly, it is a nice treat to have a great room, but I am not there to sleep.

As for food, and activities, those weren't mentioned at all. I could on for days about that, I have lots of favorites and lots of places I avoid, anyone who goes to vegas lots would.
Rancid, your list makes no sense when compared to your earlier posts...you have Bellagio #3, yet you said it is old etc...Caesars is #2 and you compared it to Luxor...(and you seem to hate the Luxor).

My question is...would you stay at PH towers, Aria, or Vdara...in a basic deluxe suite? Is there much difference between them?

I use to work at the highest rated course in Western Canada 17 yrs ago...got endless free rounds. I wouldn't pay more than $40 for any round...total waste of money...

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is the newest of luxury property in Sin City. Great hotel and gaming facilities. Too bad the original group behind it wasn't there to finish it and its now controlled by Deutsche Bank. I foresee the Cosmopolitan ending up with the MGM-Mandalay Group in a few years.

Nothing beats Vegas icon Steve Wynn when it comes to luxury. Second to none when it comes to spending. Always wants the best for the very best. Has the best personal artwork collection. Wynn and Encore closest competition will be the Bellagio which also happened to be owned by Wynn before selling to MGM. Too bad as well he wasn't able to finish the Monte Carlo, he designed the outside and MGM took care of the interiors. Could have been at par with the best ones with Wynn's touch. :) :)
