I saw someone the other day using their laptop at McDonald's. I should have asked if they had a network connection. It just looked really wierd.

Its a bit hit or miss but airports now all seem to have free wireless internet - invaluable if your flight is going to be late.

The library may also have this but i haven't taken my laptop out in a while.

Worse comes to worse, and if you have a proper firewall and security setup in place, you can go to an internet cafe and unplug the network cable from the machine you are renting and stick it in the laptop. Ditto for the library. The computers are all exposed (at least in the Vancouver Main branch).

Coffee places with free wireless:

1. Waves coffee house: Main st. & 10th ave. I think they're even open 24 hrs. Lots of space with lots of power outlets, fast connection.
2. The Grind, Main st. & 41st. Wireless sometimes has technical problems there. Big tables, 24 hrs.
3. Blenz on Robson & Bute. About 6 outlets, fast connection.
4. Blenz on Burrard across from HMV. Only 2 or 3 outlets, always packed.
5. Coffee shop on Burrard (same side as Denny's) half way between Davies and Robson. Many power outlets.
6. Coffee shop next to Future Shop in Metrotown area. A few power outlets, but comfortable place, usually quiet. Not open late at night.
7. PC games room near Future Shop in Metrotown area. If you can stand the noise of games, it's a good place with a very fast connection. Open till about midnight. Will let you use your own laptop and even their ethernet or wireless. Not free ($2/hr).

Best thing to get is Rogers' Portable Internet service. You get a portable modem, and you can connect from anywhere (you don't need someone else's wireless connection). The portable modem is the size of an average slim textbook and picks up a wireless signal from a Roger's cell tower. The speed is a full 10Mbps and very very little congestion if any. I use this to work at Tim Horton's, restaurants, campers, anywhere I can get a power outlet. I'll be camping with it this summer.

I checked this out GBM and found it's (Rogers portable) only avail. in greater Vancouver, Victoria and Abbotsford. So (right now anyways), you'll need to restrict your summer camping to certain areas.

Not true. I use the Roger's service in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Burnaby, New West, Richmond and Coquitlam. In fact, I'm in Coquitlam right now on Roger's.

I do believe I'm right on this one George. The areas you noted are of course, as I stated above, in the Greater Vancouver coverage area. Try using it in Chilliwack or the Okanagan and you'll see what I'm talking about. As as matter of fact, you can look at Rogers site and see for yourself - see / click below

Then take a look at the coverage area map :

Who cares about Chilliwack and the Okanagan! Those places are out in the wilderness where nothing of any consequence ever happens anyways. When visiting, it's like stepping back in time 20 years.... girls in their 20's with 80's haircuts pregnant and barefooted, guys driving El Caminos with a bucket of fried chicken behind the seat, etc.

OK George, whatever you say. I would say a lot of people care about Chilliwack, Okanagan, the north etc. BTW - There's nothing wrong with stepping back in time either. The discussion was not about giving a shit about the Okanagan, it was about Rogers portable internet service outside the Greater Vancouver Area. You now know what the Greater Vancouver area encompasses.

Actually, I didn't mean it. Frankly I find those places charming and I like to stop by once in awhile on long road trips to Edmonton or Calgary. I was just trying to add a colorful description to a boring techie thread about wireless access, to spice things up a bit and yank a few chains. But you handled it well and I applaud and respect your indomitability. Lesser beings, and there are a notable few on this board, would have used a lot of four letter words and thrown insults.

Have not province
Adding to GBM's Metrotown area, also the far end of the A&W restaurant at Station Square has an open unsecured wireless G connection.

If you're in Richmond, the parking lot at Bridgeport Futureshop has an open connection.

Oh thanks for the information from the above posters about the Vancouver main library cable connection. I thought they all had Kensington locks on them or threaded plastic cuffs. I've got to double check today!

problem is you have to carry around this modem.

the best solution is a 3G or evdo pc card and a monthly subscription to telus. i take my computer all over bc with great connections. yah, it's 100 per month but just drop a cheap pooning session each month.
Roger's is $39.95, with unlimited data transfer (on high speed).... and I mean unlimited (I've abused the hell out of it). The modem is the size of a small textbook, and given I have to carry a laptop and related equipment, it's not much more. It weighs 2 lbs. I usually don't need to be that mobile. Once I get to my destination, I stay for hours on my laptop. For example, I don't need a wireless connection while I am driving. I assume the Telus service let's you connect while on the road? What about data transfer $ rates?

Ha! Speaking of which, drive to the top floor parking next to A&W .... go up there with your wireless laptop and pick up all the unsecured connections from the condo tower right next to it. You won't believe how many I got last summer.... a convenient way to surf from your car.
