Who'd he beat?

Greatest athlete? Most famous athlete? Most popular athelete?

The above lines blur during these polls.

Usually Muhammed Ali keeps winning these polls.

Muhammed faced the "demon" so many times and won while being a heavy underdog.

Muhammed had Liston (8 to 1 underdog), Frazier, the brooding Foreman, and even the rising Leon Spinks. I think they were all gold medalists like him.

Bill Russel got to duel and beat Wilt Chamberlain.
Magic Johnson got to duel with Larry Bird.
Michael Jordan was a heavy favourite in all of his finals.

Lance Armstrong? Who did he beat? Was he a heavy favourite every time?

Give him a break, the guy only has ONE testicle and yet still wins the Tour De France.

I may be mistaken but I think the answer to your question is EVERYBODY and five years in a row to boot!

Miguel Indurain won the Tour de France five times in a row in the early nineties and looked even more unbeatable doing it. He would probably won a few more in a row but retired after number five. Armstrong has won five, about to be six, but I don't think they have been consecutive. I may be wrong, though. And having only one nut should make cycling easier, shouldn't it?

My feelings are if Lance was a Canadian there wouldnt be so much hype and he wouldnt get as much endorsements. Infact lanse wouldnt be in as many top greatest athlete list. Now if Ali was Canadian he'd be less popular also.

Lance is definitely one of the top athletes in the world. Try sitting on a bike for 21 days or whatever and pedal for 4-5 hour sper day. The team helps a lot but look at his time in the hill climb Time Trial. If you weren't a strong rider there is no way you could DESTROY every other rider. And I don't think lance is getting this hype because he is American. A Canadian wouldn't get as much bad press, actually I think he would be more popular. Lance takes so much shit from the french it isn't funny. A Canadian would have more endorsement for sure. Cycling isn't even big over here, imagine if it wAS how much endorsements he would get then. Lance is a machine and easily one of the top physical athletes in the world.

lance currently makes something

like 6-9 Million a year in endorsements ...

however, when he wins the Tour de France (about $400,000 top prize) he gives the whole amount to his team-mates to split for their efforts in helping him win.

the only athletes who would come close would be tri-athletes, but they only do it in one day not over 3 weeks ...

Lance has to beat someone "famous". This always held back Larry Holmes, when people ask if Larry could be considered one of the greatests.

Lance beat "everyone they put in front of him", the same way Tiger Woods beat "everyone they put in front of him".

Terry Bradshaw had Roger Staubach, it is harder to compare Lance to anyone else.

There can be a lack of drama, if he's too "domineering".
