That's a great question CT. I've often wondered the same thing. Since I was a child I've never been able to wrap my mind around the average person's obsession and fascination with celebrities.
JFK. John Lennon. Princess Di. Dorothy Straten. Just wait for Queen Elizabeth. If this had been Obama and his daughter, oh my, and even he offered sympathy and shock too.
CT you really only pass dribble and shoot in hoops.

1. What he's done may be wrong. But he's dead.

2. What kind of a victim allows their silence to be bought with money if it really mattered to them?

1. Why do you care that he is dead? Why does that change what he did?

2. She received death threats from his fans for daring to accuse Kobe the Great. Wouldn’t you take the money rather than deal with that and the inevitability of having your life dragged through the mud in a criminal trial?

The FAA has determined the cause of the crash. Kobe’s ego exceeded the load limit of the helicopter.

Absolutely I will. It’s obvious he was a total hypocrite with the girls’ dad thing.
so he was not a great dad to his 4 girls because you were a first hand witness to him and his family and his life with his girls...ok thanks

He promotes himself as a girls dad. That’s really nice. He raped another dad’s girl and paid his way out of it. Hypocrisy

Well documented by SI at the time. She agreed to sex, but not anal sex, when he attempted it, she refused, he did it anyway. Rapist under the definition.
i’m saying none of us were there and the different versions of belief in the truth has tainted his reputation granted, but a payout in a civil court can be a method to bring quick closure to an otherwise long drawn out court and media proceeding and all parties involved did not want that, hers included. there was an admission of acknowledgement of her account on his part, however not a full disclosure of guilt on his. this phenomena, which is bothering some on here does not happen if he doesn’t become who he is today, not half a lifetime ago, in the eyes of millions of fans, professional players and entertainers, presidents and business leaders, not to mention all of his close friends and associates, and finally his immediate family, wife and daughters. you may not like it nor him, but it is what it is for obvious reasons, he was immeasurably respected and loved at the end of his short but accomplished life. watch the super bowl tomorrow, the most watched event in the world, and see. "The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." F. Scott Fitzgerald ... I think this applies well to this thread.

Uh huh. And there are white supremacists who admire Hitler and people who actually voted for Trump. Go figure.

And the fact a Washington post reporter received death threats from Kobe's fans just for tweeting a link to an old article speaks volumes... I can only imagine the hell that 19 year old was put through when she came forward.

Something that feels so strange to me is I've been accused of being a "rapist apologist" in the past for speaking my opinion about how the terms "rape', "sexual assault" and "sexual harassment" get thrown around so loosely these days. I'm very critical of the dangers of metoo. And I feel modern day feminism is an embarrassment to legit strong women.

yet its sooo socially inappropriate to mention a past rape allegation against a NBA star, in which there was actual evidence??

I stand by my previous comment... humans confuse me.

This has been explained in large part by cognitive dissonance. People have heroes, often athletes, and they are unwilling to accept their flaws and lash out against those who point them out. I have otherwise sane and intelligent friends who are New England Patriot fans and just can't accept the "proof" that they have cheated on numerous occasions.

I think it's sort of weird to talk about dead people, either in positive or negative light. It's an extinguished flame. It's a period on an otherwise sentence of someone else's life. If you like them, pay your respects. If you don't like them, they matter absolutely nothing to you. Unless you're discussing from the intellectual perspective pertinent to historical development, personal opinions about a dead person neither proves moral superiority nor compassion.

There are two types of victims; Those who hate aggressors enough that they seek vindication, or those who don't feel the former and would take the money. It doesn't matter what the person is as long as they accept a resolution. 2.5 Million Dollars is more than what most people will make in a lifetime of labor and, in her acceptance of it, is deemed a valid recompense for her suffering. No one else has the authority to say who's right or wrong - An exchange of time was made for money. The transaction is concluded, and the wrongs have been neutralized.
