North Korea's illustrious leader has died.

There should be an interesting power struggle happening now, between his sons, and senior members of the military.

When do we get to see 1000 actors and actresses cry their eyes out. You know it happened when his father died. I've never seen so many croc tears.

As far as I know Kim Jong-il spent the last year of his life purging any potential threat to his 27-year old heir.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Unfortunately nothing will change for the North Korean citizens.
The only hope oppressed people such as these have is if the leader dies totally unexpectedly. Then there is a power vacuum, where in hopefully a more moderate regime will take over or even better, the people would sieze the opportunity to revolt and obtain real change.
In this case KimJong-Il has spent the better part of his dying days grooming his son and making sure those left behind in positions of power, will honor his son's authority. The onle hope the North Korean people have is that the son isn't such a nut-bar, which is very unlikely.
That said assassinating the son while the country is in mourning, as well as a state of flux and the resulting turmoil could provide an opportunity for a more moderate regime.;)

Faint hope for a more moderate regime. If Kim Jung Un tries to be more moderate, the hardliners would find a way to make him less moderate....I agree with an above poster, the Un has eyes of stone, cold. Either that or he's scared shitless at the fact that he just inheirited a really fucked up situation.

I think a lot of them are real.... You can't possibly comprehend the power of brainwashing. Those dictators have built a cult of personalities, and people grew up with propaganda from the government. Just like when Kim Il Sung died, millions of people were crying on the street,

It would be quite impossible for them to have an uprising, since they use intRAnet not intERnet. Unlike the middle east, there are some form of contact with rest of the world and through immigration. NK is completely cut off from the world.

I'm going to miss the annual bellicose statements about "merciless punishments to the USA and Japan", etc.

I'm also going to miss his happy smile like he didn't have a care in the world, and of course, his awesome perm.

oops, sorry wrong guy.

Canada boycotts UN tribute to Kim Jong-il

The first was Nasser summoned the North Korean ambassador Sin Son-Ho to convey his condolences to the country's government and people, while envoys from other nations respectfully bowed their heads.

"It is my sad duty to pay tribute to the memory of the late Kim Jong-il," Nasser said at the start of the assembly session.

The second thing that happened was that representatives from Canada, the U.S., South Korea, Japan, and several European nations stood up and left the room in protest.

They may have had there political differences with the socialist system but that was awfully disrespectfull of them.

Fudd, I swear you must have a few screws loose to write such nonsense. How could anyone show any kind of respect for a madman who has starved over 1 million of his people (and counting) while he himself was getting fat off the foreign aid he extorted via his nuclear bomb program? Maybe you should go spend some time with the regular people in N.K., then report back to us on how sweet life is in the land of "self-reliance"?

Dmbass! I sure hope you are not contributing to the gene pool.

Is he sad because he doesn't want to pay tribute, but has to because it's his duty? Not sure I understand the tone.

Anyway, my friends in Japan are really uneasy right now about all this. Fat little fingers on the nuke button is a mood killer.

If anyone is interested in North Korea, there's a great book called "Nothing To Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" by Barbara Demick. Highly recommend it.
Here's a link if anyone if anyone wants more info http://nothingtoenvy.com/
