Vancouver Aquarium says 4 whales were spotted in Burrard Inlet on Thursday morning

CBC News Posted: Mar 12, 2015 11:39 AM PT| Last Updated: Mar 12, 2015 12:57 PM PT

Four killer whales have been spotted swimming under the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver's Stanley Park on Thursday morning.

According to the Vancouver Aquarium, the orcas were spotted in the busy commercial harbour as far east as the Ironworkers' Memorial Bridge.

Another report placed the pod near Strathcona Park east of Deep Cove.

Carla Crossman, a research biologist at the Vancouver Aquarium, said while sightings of killers whales around Vancouver are not common, it is not totally unexpected to see them.

"These are probably Biggs killer whales, also known as transients, so they probably made their way up to the Deep Cove area to go hunting for some seals... that area is rich in seals right now, so there's a lot of food for them up in the Inlet," said Crossman.

Last year a pod was spotted hunting in Howe Sound near Squamish and in 2013 a pod of eight whales was spotted in English Bay and Burrard Inlet.

Crossman asked boaters who might encounter the whales to give them space.

"There's always threats anytime whales are close quarters with boats. Coming right into the Inlet, it's really important for boaters be aware there are whales in the area. Try to keep their distance and go really slowly."

It's my dream to see a killer whale!! I'm so close to the park and go for bike rides alot.. Under the bridge! I hope to see them one day! I went salmon fishing in Uculet a few years ago.. I seen so many Humpback whales! They were breaching and putting on a great show!
There was even a little baby!!
I love Vancouver! :)

my first year in vancouver i went to see the sand cliffs at point roberts. while we were sitting on a log eating our lunch 2 orcas surfaced about 50 feet offshore and cavorted around for us for a few minutes

the lady i was with said i was so lucky because she'd lived in vancouver all her life and had never seen one (this was before the days of captive whales ;) )

I've seen orcas twice in the Gulf Islands and once in Centre Bay last year. In Centre Bay the pod of three breached about 15 feet from my bow while we were standing still. It was incredible! But porpoises are even better. Sometimes they'll come up behind the boat and shoot into the air right in front of the bow. Once when I was transiting Gillard Pass I had 6 of them screwing around with me for about 10 minutes. One of the best experiences of my life.

It's magical when wildlife chooses to interact with us, isn't it? :)
