Another interesting development has been created with the Miller signing. What happens with Markstrom? He's a $1.2M cap hit who is destined for the minors. In order to be sent down though he needs to clear waivers. I would think Benning isn't gonna pull a Gillis and risk losing him for nothing, ala Aaron Volpatti....given the other good young goalies now in the system I'm expecting Markstrom will be traded....time will tell.
Markstrom has asked for trade with atleast 3 teams interested. http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/533580

The Vancouver Canucks have signed unrestricted free-agent forward Radim Vrbata to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $5 million.

Vrbata's agent, Rich Evans, tweeted Wednesday night that his client would be joining a Canadian NHL club before adding "Yes, it is Vancouver" minutes later.

In 80 games with the then-Phoenix Coyotes in 2013-14, Vrbata scored 20 goals and 31 assists. He is coming off a three-year contract that paid him an average annual value of $3 million.

Vrbata has played the past five seasons with the Coyotes. He has spent time with the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning over his 12-year NHL career.

The 32-year-old forward has 215 goals and 249 assists for 464 points over 792 career games in the NHL.

Vrbata, a native of Czech Republic, was drafted by Colorado in the seventh round (212nd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Only in the sports world would a fairly average player, coming of a pretty mediocre season get a $2 million raise.

Maybe he'll catch fire and magic will happen to re-ignite the twins, but also, maybe not. Age is catching up with the Sedins and nothing can fix that.

Must be nice to be able to throw around someone else's money like that.

I'd prefer to be in the McDavid sweeps and then reload next free agency season. Alas, I'm not the GM of the Canucks. With the signing of Vrbata, the Canucks just feel like a #9 or 10 seed, which sucks because then they are in that NHL abyss of not good enough for the playoffs, but not bad enough for a franchise player.
I totally agree.
One more bad season would've been tolerable for the chance to draft a potential superstar prospect.
Linden has the populace charmed and would've been able to sell this, but he and benning have other ideas.

Markstrom wants to be traded, eh? Has he seen himself play the past two years? At this point, if he wants to be the starter, he'll have to do it for Lokomotiv.

Whether or not to tank or not to tank would have been second guessed by the likes of Tony Gallager and Jason Botchford.

.
I dispute he is an "average" player. He sits nicely in the list of top goal scorers over the past three seasons:

You do realize that it is a draft lottery. All the worst 5 teams have an actual shot at the #1 and #2 overall picks.

The way the NHL conducts its internal stuff even if we did nothing and finished with the worst ever record. The NHL will never allow the vancouver Canucks to have either of the top 2 picks in the draft especially with 2 generational players expected.
Don't talk down to me.
every nhl fan is aware that there's a draft lottery.
Read my post. I specifically referred to a 'chance to draft a...'

Badger, can you elaborate on your sentence that "the NHL will never allow the Vancouver Canucks to have either of the top 2 picks in the draft especiallywith 2 generational players expected."

If the Canucks were to finish in the bottom 5(?)would they not be eligible for the lottery? How could the NHL prevent them from taking part?
I don't follow this as carefully as many,so I could well be missing something here.

Have to put my Tin Hat on for that one.. LOL However if the Canucks Finished dead last out of 30 teams in the Season. I'm pretty sure that they would lose the first overall pick in that bullshit lottery that nobody believes in. Since it's all done in "private" before the results are brought forward. Just like Buffalo lost this years to Florida. Happened many times. Except when certain teams are there. So it Always seems.
I wasn't aware the lottery was done in private, and certainly was unaware that it might be rigged.

What amazes me most is why wouldn't the owners demand transparency for something as important as obtaining the #1 draft pick?

To my way of thinking, the owners and GM's of the eligible teams,#26-30 overall, should be present while the draft is being undertaken.

Why do they just show blind faith/trust in the process, particularly if there's a history of questionable previous outcomes.

I'm surprised the media hasn't questioned this lottery process, or,if they have,I haven't noticed it.Strange,indeed.

re..tanking,saw something on TSN recently, about the 83-84 Penguins finishing last to get Lemieux. Can't quote the exact wording but Lou Angotti, the coach
didn't argue it and Eddie Johnston, the gm at the time, didn't admit it, but said something like "doing what's best for the team"

didn't leave much doubt that they lay down in the home stretch to get the #1 pick.

this was,of course, years before the draft lottery came about.

rintin6...you say each team has a representative there, which totally makes sense,as that's the way it should be.

later you said 'and the NHL is tainting the draft lottery, the NHL would rig it in their favor"

but,how could they rig it if each team has a rep there?

I guess I'm a slow study, but I'm still confused re this draft lottery, lol.

Badger says it's done in "private" before the results are brought forward, and rintin6 says each team has a representative present.

both of them are knowledgable, but I'm trying to work out how both statements can be accurate?
