It's standard operating procedure to qualify your players. Kassian is still very much in their plans.

The Player as an RFA can apply for salary arbitration and go through the arbitration hearing process. (Tanev is probably heading that way.)

Every year Players off Entry level deals who become RFA's have to choice to accept the qualifying offer and sign for the amount or not sign. Nothing to stop the team or player from signing a new deal during the season, but you know you have your player locked up. No other team can send an offer sheet to a qualified player.

If they don't sign it opens it up for other teams to sign them to an offer sheet. Then the Original Team has 7 days to respond to by signing the player to the terms of the offer sheet or allowing the player to move for draft choice compensation the next season (s). ie Kesler and Philly (Canucks) / Backes and Canucks (Blues). Both teams matched the offer and kept their players

If a player accepts arbitration or takes a team to arbitration then they can't receive an offer sheet from another NHL team.

If a team does not submit a qualifying offer the player becomes a UFA. ie Schroeder/ Sauve and many others.
My hunch is Kassian's agent felt Zak was worth X and Benning felt Zak was worth X - $Y = Reality.

No harm in qualifying him since the cards are stacked in the Canucks favour. It will just mean we have another pouty player if it become a shotgun contract.

Personally I never saw the value of Kassian. Sometimes a minor flourish of brilliance with a lot of WTF are you doing out there Zak? Sabres 1 Canucks 0 in the Hodgson Kassian trade.

I like the signings, 2-3 years on a player 30+ is a good amount of term. The younger players can have time to develop on the farm or play another year in jr without overbearing them in the NHL to quickly. They are also easier contracts to trade if they need to be moved. A little different dressing room is 3 seasons ago due.

I like the Miller signing as it gives proper time for Eddie Lack to grow as a goaltender. Eddie Lack played his best last season with Roberto Luongo around. I would hate to see his development and confidence go to the toilet. No need to rush these young players and prospects. He was supposed to be a backup for the next few years anyways.

Kassian seems to be more of a playmaker type than a power forward.

Bertuzzi had his slow moments here too. Until he got suspended for fighting Scott Parker of the Avs (leaving the bench).

Remember Cam Neely?....ugh

My biggest pet peeve of Canadian hockey fans is they think all Canadian born players want to play in Canada for their hometown teams. Take a look at recent history. NO major superstar in his prime has signed with a Canadian team.

just read that Radim Vrbata will get a shot at playing with the Sedins.funny, cuz I was wondering about that earlier, him being a right-hand shot and
Burrows coming off a difficult year with inuries, etc.

also,I have read verbatim about the need for righties on the power play,so I guess he'll get time on the 1st unit, again with the twins?

I'd've thought mgement would've tried to keep Santorelli if there was cap space, because, before he was injured, was he not fairly productive?at a lower salary?

Benning is making moves in what will be a long road back.

kudos to Travis Green, nixing Pitts. to stay with his kids in Utica&help their development.

totally unrelated......GO GENIE!!

Pretty good deal to see if Kassian is able to play consistent enough to earn a long term contract. I'm hoping the Canucks can sign Tanev for a little longer maybe a 4 year deal.

The Nucks are now a bunch of no names except the Twins and the Goalie. I think ticket prices should be lower don't you.

Wonder if Benning would consider trading Burrows and/or Edler? Heard rumours that Buffalo's Tyler Myers might be a target for Benning.

Interesting perspective you Canuck fans do having. Coming from back east for more than last 10 years we only looked out here with admiration at the consistently excellent teams you had. We never considered players like Edler, Higgins, Hamhuis, Beiksa to be "no names" and the Sedins are very elite and likely going to hall of fame (every player who has won Art Ross who is retired is in hall of fame). You had one bad year and bad coach and all of a sudden you think world is ending. I have friends who are Leafs and Sabres fans and you much know Oiler and Flamers fans here - just think of what their last five to ten years of hell has been compared to the teams you have had?

I am finding people here in BC tend to have lots more opinions about other people's business, seem to like to pay too much for lots of things (coffee, sex and houses) and think all their sports teams are way worse than they actually are (though your Lions succccccckkkkkkedd big time against that Als last night!).

It will be hard to trade Burrows or Edler. How about Hansen?

Its ok to be close to the cap as it will keep getting higher each of the next few seasons. If the players work hard I don't care what they make per year.

on yer ignore list
burrows used to be a hard working, scoring kinda player. i can't believe that he would fold up his game forever just because of two pretty serious injuries in a season

surely once he gets completely healthy he'll be his former self?

Did it not occur to you that Vancouver has a huge Asian money influence with housing/buying sex that the locals have little to no control over?
