Man electrocuted apparently tried to steal wire

New Westminster police are attempting to identify a man who was electrocuted Sunday while apparently attempting to steal wire from a GVRD sewer pump station in the 200-block Brunette Ave.

Sgt Ivan Chu said the man’s badly charred body was found at about 3:30 p.m. when an electrician was dispatched to the pump station after a power interruption occurred.

"To get into the station he had to climb two high chain-link fences. He used wire cutters to cut his way in. Then he had to scale a 15-foo- high wall. He went up the wall using an exhaust duct," said Chu.

He said the man either jumped or fell off the wall onto one of the six transformers that were held off the ground on poles and was killed instantly.

The transformer carried 69,000 volts.

Chu said the electric shock was so severe it burnt the man’s clothes off.

"The clothes were just ash," he said. The victim’s bicycle was found parked outside the pump station.

LOL! Where's that other guy who continually brought forward these type of posts reveling in the misfortune of others?

poor?... probably, given the presumed theft attempt

misguided?... likely, given the result

misunderstood?... not sure - insufficient data

Sad thing is, if he'd survived he probably could have sued the GVRD for failing to keep him out of there!

All semi-precious metals (namely copper and aluminum) have very high scrap rates right now, and the rate isnt going down anytime soon.

...and if you want to make a decent buck, start a security firm and provide a more consistently visible and intimidating presence guarding the vast amount of construction sites around town.

You know...I've been thinking about this. Do you think being "poor" should be a license to steal? It may help with the day to day support of addiction, and generally not an addiction to food, but it's not as though it's ever going to change the bigger issue of social injustice and despair. Neither is voting in or electing governments and officials who promise change but end up bending everybody over just like their predecessors. It's going to take out and out civil disobedience and virtual anarchy by hundreds of thousands, not hundreds or thousands. Can it really be all that bad if people aren't taking the steps to affect real change? I hear what you're saying but struggle to sympathize on a day to day basis.

Come to think of it...I WANT ANARCHY! Storm the government and government institutions, storm big business, especially Wall Mart, the banks, and oil companies!

A Different Persepctive!

I think the fact of the matter is alot of these guys are so drug addicted that they dont give a shit about themselves or what damage they do. They just cant rationalize how they can get themselves killed or cause $100 K in damage, all they can think about is their next fix.

It's like how some of us feel about wanting to go have sex, we even pay for it! Imagine this 1000x worse when you are hooked or crack or herion. Once your hooked, you have no control of your actions.

The government needs to actually do their job and regulate these places that buys scrap metal. The lower mainland is starting to have a third world mentalilty with the very poor killing themselves literally for a bit of money, instead of having services to get these people help and law enforcement to keep the drug dealers in prison.
