I just received a jury selection letter a week ago, went on their website to apply for an exemption under the financial hardship reason. The trial is expected to go for at least 44 days. I just got a reply email this morning that I've been excused.

I appreciate all the opinions and input
I actually wouldn't mind the experience and responsibility but I am self employed, 10 days off at my peak season plus paying for driving, parking, lunches, etc.
isn't something that I really want to do right now...

Update: replied to summons explaining financial stress (true) and was excused in 24 hours

Just got a letter
I can't afford to take 10 days off Shit...

Any experiences or ideas to get "excused" Show up with a Trump Hat and Shirt?
Send the Sherriff an email and explain your circumstances. If they insist you attend for selection, then ratchet it up a notch.

(I did jury duty seven years ago and loved it, but I had a union job and got paid my full salary to attend)

Most of the advice in here seems geared to a US court. The only time I served (which was, admittedly, a civil trial) no one asked me anything and no one was excused for anything other than financial hardship.

I think we get 10 paid days for jury duty with my employer. I’d even do another unpaid week or two happily to do my part. Anything beyond that I’d probably get too bored and resent the process.

I've also wondered this myself as well. I've given an excuse as I have a mortgage, bills, student loan, etc... to pay and could not possibly take a month off unpaid. How could anyone that has rent or a mortgage be expected to not be paid for an indeterminate amount of time? Are we just expected to dip into our savings that is supposed to be used for emergencies for such an occasion?

I proudly have done jury duty, twice. Enjoyed every bit of it. Can't remember what the first one was, and it was only a cpl days. Second one, was a murder trial. I got elected as jury captain. It ran close to 3 weeks. Some very gruesome evidence, that some members were not prepared for. It was well worth my time doing my part. I learned a hell of a lot. BTW I was employed in a union job that covered jury duty, as sick leave. Fully covered.
