Just our luck no Olympics and maybe the rest of the season.

VANCOUVER (CP) — Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ed Jovanovski will undergo a lower abdominal surgical procedure on Wednesday and will be unavailable to Team Canada at next month’s Olympics.

The Canucks announced Monday night that Jovanovski would have the surgery in Philadelphia and be out of action for at least six weeks.

“After further consultation with one of the leading physicians with regard to abdominal sports injuries it was decided that surgery was the best course of action,” Canucks GM Dave Nonis said in a release. “The best long term decision for Eddie and our hockey club was to have the surgery immediately.”

TSN reported on its website that Jovanovski’s season could be over depending on what the doctor finds during surgery. :(

Big problems now for Team Canada's defence as Niedermeyer may also be opting for surgery and back up Brian McCabe is just now back from injury and who knows how he will be.

Sure, Nonis should make a deal for a defenceman but who is out there and available that a team out of the playoffs would part with? St. Louis has Barett Jackman but the Blues won't part with him. He's young, cheaper and an up and coming defenceman.

Adam Foote? I doubt Columbus would trade him and if they did, they would ask an arm and a leg.

Good maybe now this will open the door for some up and coming talent like Dion Phaneuf, the kid already has international experience and hits like Scott Stevens and plays and skates like Scott Niedermeyer

he should have traded both lame ducks at the start of the season.
even worse is that jovo is unrestricted next year ... canucks will probably lose him for nothing.

Jovo is the type of player you want in the playoffs not give away for a draft pick. If we make the playoffs, hopefully he'll be back by then.

A massive shake -up !!?? Smother, you talk like the Canucks are the St. Louis Blues. Maybe you forget what it's like to have a team below .500 ?

In the last season the Canucks played the team won the division title which is no easy feat given the division in which they play. And they did it with this group of guys. But there has always been an issue of inconsistency as their are a number of guys who don't play with the same intensity and passion every game. Jovo was definetely one of those guys who could turn it up two or three notches in clutch moments. He's a great playoff guy. But that is a real pisser too because I'm sure it rubs off on other guys. I'm personally not so sad that he's out. He underplays for what he is paid.

The Canucks need another blue line guy who plays with grit and passion all of the time. Perhaps a defenseman who plays with the intesity of Matt Cooke. Matte Cooke is the kind of guy who always hits and forechecks hard and plays with passion. Did anyone notice that our winning streak started again when he got back in the line- up ? And now that he's out again the Nucks lost three in a row .

And goaltending is without a doubt an issue. Auld's SV% isn't all that bad and he can be brilliant , but he almost always lets in a soft goal-- last game and the Buffalo game an exception. I'm hoping he just keeps getting better and his mental focus improves to that of a Kipprassoff or Hasek. I think he can be a top guy. But what happens if he goes down ?? YIKES.

Playoffs is were it matters....not regular season....everyones knows that..
Playoffs is a different world....all together..
The last 3 seasons......same team.....same results....that's what i mean by shake up....OBVIOUSLY....i'm not saying the whole team.....a few trades are needed though.....

cheers..

I've got a problem with the medical staff of the Canucks. It would appear that they misdiagnosed the Jovo injury and were hoping that he would heal without surgery. They were wrong, Jovo goes under the knife and might be back for the playoffs. If they had the surgery for him right away when he first injured himself on Dec 28th, he'd be 3 weeks closer to playing and almost assuredly would be in the playoffs when we need him the most. Same thing with Cloutier. Remember he was "healing" for about 3 weeks before the medical staff realized that he needed season ending surgery. He too is a question mark for being back for the playoffs. Maybe he'd be ready for the playoffs if he'd had the surgery sooner. I realize that the preference of the athlete and doctors is to let the body heal itself, but in both cases waiting didn't make things better, they just lost crucial healing time. When it happens to two important players, you have to start looking at the medical staff and wonder if they screwed up.
