From Academy Award®--winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
I'm really excited about this one. If I remember correctly, Andrew Stanton directed Finding Nemo and one of my favourite Pixar movies, Wall-E.

Looks promising from the above trailers. But Disney flicks are somewhat hit and miss for me with likes of National Treasure and Prince of Persia. It's like Avatar all over again from pulp fiction on a different planet with green creatures.

The John Carter of Mars storys were the first .. Alien adventure ..
I never read the books , but allways loved the Boris illustrations i for got that that is what most of them were based on .

I am surprised the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate did not sue , over how similar some of Star War , and Avatar , were to the John Carter stories ..

But now John Carter will be compared to those movies instead of being recognized as some of the story;s that started it all .A long with Jules Vern .

I saw John Carter last night .. The non 3D version. I will go back and see the IMAX 3D

I thought it was good .. not great.. only because as some other reviewers noted there is nothing new in the story or the special effects .. We have seen it all before. Because all the other S movies . have taken from the John Carter stories . The first is now last ..

I am going to have to go read the books to see how much of the movie is true to the original .. But if it is true to the original . I can see so much of all the other great SF movies were take right from the E R Burroughs writing .. I see shades of Avitar,, Star Wars, Babylon 5 and even SuperMan which i saw mentioned in Wikipedia..

What the story does suffer from is ..the simplicity of the stories from the early 1900's... Mars being called "Barsoom " and one city being called Helium . a little lam ..

There were some up dates in how Carter got to Mars .. In the original I understand it was some mysterious Astro projecting after death , some thing that had many believes back them and still does d today . In this movies they use teleporting with a medallion some thing that we all are familiar with.

ASs for the shape shifter that manipulates and seduces the people and the fait of planets . I say that is the dark side , the devil ,Satan ... Star wars any one.. And then there are the 8 ft tall 4 armed .. greenies .. that are all for the planet and don't like technology Avitar any one .. which was first .. It seem all he directors and writes all read ER Burroughs books .. lets talk about plagiarism big time.

And then there is the jumping .. Ok it was not believable . Mars may have have the gravity and a lot denser atmosphere , and JC is stronger on Mars .. But even the astronauts could not jump like that on the moon with one sixth earth gravity .. But it never said he as this supper gymnast also . LOL

I was looking through the E R Burroughs web page o John Carter of Mars .. e stories have piles of illustrations .. of the 4 armed Martians .. the movie basically recreated those .. a long with the 8 legged creatures ..

Through the decades the John Carter stories were shown in illustrations , and comics But this generation know nothing a bought the character .
Disney real fell down on there promotion of this movie .. and how they made it .. In the original story the princess was usually very naked ..Yah Disney was not the company to make this movie . and they picked unknown actors to be stars .. ..Dropped the main hook in the title "Mars " and so on and so on ....It seems thay don't want people to make comparison between this movie and all the other movies made by the others , writers , directors ans even special effects artists , that basically made there name on steeling from the stories of ER Burroughs .

The less people see this the happier they will be .. because then fewer wil know how big a fake they real are .

I saw the movie in 3D at Silvercity in Metrotown yesterday evening. I wanted to see it because I read most, if not all, of the ERB John Carter pulp fiction books as a youth. Many years since I read, but there were alot changes form the books from what I remember. The movie is not likely to win any awards, but it was entertaining.

BTW, this was the first 3D movie I have seen in a very long time. I found the 3D effects more distracting than accretive to the viewing experience. I'm glad now that I saw Avatar in 2D.

Definitely a must see for Disney shareholders as it gives them a first hand look on how a studio blew away $ 250 million on a single movie that will have severe repercussions to the company's earnings. The pitch might have been so good that the Board lost all caution. Might have been inspired by the success of AVATAR.

I just saw it with my 11 yr old son...of course he loved it. I loved the actress, Lily Collins that played the martian princess......I give it a thumbs up, or 7/10...... considering it's based on a novel 100 years old, those aliens and special effects show a pretty good imagination.

I loved it! And I mean LOVED it! I watched it in 3D at an AVX theatre and thought the 3D was actually pretty good. I found it particularly effective during the flying sequences. I went with a group of friends. I know that I'm a pretty easy to please audience member, so I use their reaction to gauge if we're on the same page. I know that my one friend had some narrative issues with it but the consensus among us seemed to be that I was not alone in having REALLY enjoyed it. One of my buddies was already planning a repeat viewing in a few days with his wife.

Freakin' $ 150 Million writeoff for Disney, Paramount Pictures is quite lucky they passed on this movie years back. And the people responsible for 2012's biggest flop resigned from Disney way before the movie came out.

Apocalypse Now is based on a book 100 years old (70-80 at time of production, not sure how old AN is), and it's a stellar movie regardless of any considerations.

+1

Enjoyed watching it as well. Good script which was probably re-written a million times. Just felt bad as the projected multi-million writeoff would prevent a sequel and Disney will not be able to make a franchise out of it. Anyways, that's the movie business - there's no sure thing. However, Disney does have Marvel's " The Avengers " coming out in May.
