I think I've seen Joe Cocker three times over the past ten years opening for Tina Turner and The Guess Who and the third time is a bit fuzzy. One thing for sure was as an opening act, Joe and his band always brought their A game. I think it was the first time with Tina Turner that he got several ovations and came out for some more songs after his set. You don't see that happen very often.

I think you mean his AA game as in Alcoholics Anonymous. When he only brought his A game he was terrible.I went to see him in the 70s and he was falling down drunk on stage. I subsequently saw him when he was sober and he put on an awesome show.

I think I first heard this in the movie Benny and Joon all those years ago and it remains one of my favourites.
