"Perhaps the most confusing and dangerous religious term is "Cult". The word is derived from the French word "culte" which came from Latin noun "cultus." The latter is related to the Latin verb "colere" which means "to worship or give reverence to a deity." Thus, in its original meaning, the term "cult" can be applied to any group of religious believers: Southern Baptists or Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses or Catholics, Hindus or Muslims."
From the info i found above i wouldn't classifiy JWs as a cult. If you do then your throwing Catholics in with them.

One thing about JWs is there not blowing up buildings and killing innocent people in the name of their God.

In my view, most religions are just cults with more members.

The JWs are not mainstream by any stretch and tend to view even other Protestant churches as evil. They tend to place a lot of controls on members, and will employ fairly coercive practices like shunning on members that do not follow orders. There views on a lot of the scripture is fairly unique, and they use their own modified bible.

They would fit well into the conventional thinking of what a cult is. I had an ex-fiance that turned JW, and things did not progress too far after that. LAG, I hope you have not invested too much into your friend, because the odds are good he will probably try and associate primarily with other JWs.

This reminds me of an old joke:

Q: What do you get when you cross a Jehovah's Witness with a Hell's Angel?

A: A guy who comes to your door and tells YOU to fuck off.

But in the name of their God, they refuse to give or take blood even in the event of saving their lives or the lives of their family members. They cannot maintain close communications with anyone who is not part of their religion. They cannot get in relationships with anyone outside their religion nor date outside their religion. They don't celebrate Holidays. They don't celebrate birthdays. They are not allowed to serve in the military. They are not allowed to enter any other churches or partake with other Religious believers. They are not even allowed to go to YMCA's or YWCA's.

If they are not cult, then why do they often have the attitude of "us vs them" or "they are better than everyone else" eh?

They keep on ranting about Armageddon and how everyone has to convert or they'll die at Armageddon plus they made/make so many predictions about when the world is going to end. When their predictions fail, they come up with new doctrine or more likely, new "excuses". IMHO, if they like to be Full of Shit, they have every right to be so.

Go ahead Flame on because if you are a JW, you shouldn't even be here on this site. capisce?

Yeah... several years ago, I dated one. She, her JW family, friend and congregation are really something... when they first meet you, they love-bomb you to death, but when you decide you don't want to join them, they turn their noses at you and don't even acknowledge you next time around.

Sounds too familiar. Of course, I second what Ned said as I did go out with one.

The joyless cult that stands on corners giving away free magazines. Line from a comic: I used to be Entertainment Editor for The Watchtower.

your mom says hi.
i had a some friends all through elementary and highschool that were JW's. they were great people. they never ever brought up religion or ever tried to "convert" me, those guys were some of my best friends ever while growing up. used to party with those guys all the time, aswell as spend lots of time at their places. pretty much all of them dated outside of their religion to no consiquence of thier families or congragations. two of them out of the three even married non jovo's and they are still not jovo's.

i think there are moderates and extremists in any religion.

I have to totally agree with this.
I was raised a Jehovahs witness, when I was 19 I decided it wasnt right for me, and I 'left'. There are a select few that have "shunned" me, but my good friends have not neither has any of my family. On the rare occasion that I go to our kingdom hall(for a wedding, funeral etc) I am hugged and welcomed by I'd say 80% of the people, the other 20% ,I probably never really got along with anyways. Dont get me wrong, there are some, that think I am evil , and bad, for not accepting the religion, but most , I am on good terms with and we still associate regularly, and they have never pushed the religion on me again. My parents sometimes ask , if i will ever 'come back' but never pressure me when i say no. I know that it is different for some ,and some peoples family's will cut them off and not speak to them etc. But in my expirience, these are the individuals extreme reactioins, and not the organization of a whole.
Anyways, just the imput of someone that was there.

While this is true, certain schools of religious thought tend to produce more extremists than moderates. I would class JWs in the former category.

When your core beliefs revolve around the fact that all other religious beliefs are totally wrong and devoid of any merit, and those believers are doomed, you are more likely to get extreme behaviour from members towards non members or ex-members. Frankly, the elders in the JW organization I encountered certainly did not seem to be moderating influences by any stretch.

While obviously one can argue that this is just individual behaviour, the fact of the matter is if you enter into one of these organizations, it is pretty likely you will start incorporating a lot of the organization's beliefs and attitudes.

This person i know works partime hours and barely survive but preaches 30+ hours a week. Seems like many JW only work partime and preach fulltime. They look forward to the afterlife

My experience was totally different. I dated one and hung out with her "friends", family and shared laughs with them. Then, because I wasn't in the religion, they regard me as an "acquaintance" and not a "friend". Afterwards, when I decided I didn't want to join in after going to their fellowships a few times, they consider me a nobody. Not even an acknowledgement when they see me in public. What the Fuck is that shit???
Jeez, I guess eating out together and going and hanging out in groups or helping them out with some chores don't mean much to them.
