Depends who you ask.

- gadget freaks love it cuz it's shiny and new
- spoiled jerks love it because it's (temporarily) an expensive, rare status symbol
- gamers love it because it's a big bad new thing with big bad new games
- vultures and profiteers love it because you can resell them for a ton on ebay

The PS3 arrives in north america in a week, so it'll be interesting to see how things work out. IMO, it's a "go big or gome home" play from Sony. The PS3 is very nice is many ways, and is very wrong in many others. It will be neat to see what happens.

Here's yer financial tip of the week:

Buy up as many of these fuckers as you can when they come out and sell 'em off on eBay.
They released around 800,000 of the PS2 when they came out, and there were mad shortages. Sony grossly underestimated the initial response to the console.
This time around, they're releasing about 200,000 units initially, and right b4 Xmas.
Do the math.

Sony is using the PS3 to promote their BluRay DVD platform, it's VHS vs. Beta all over again.

Uno viso, omnia visa sunt
Last year I lined up at about 4am to get an XBOX 360 and I wound up wishing I had 2 or 3 more of them to sell.... the one I managed to get by lining up I could have sold an hour later for $300 more than I paid for it.... and the demand only got greater the closer it came to Xmas.
By Xmas I could have sold it for triple what i paid for it.

This year I went to Zellers and bought one of the PS3 that they did on presale... so i have the one for myself.

I plan to line up somewhere this friday and try to get at least one more... I think I will try the Great Canadian Superstore near my place.... if I get one I'm going to sell it and repay myself for the one I already have!

That will mean I got a Free PS3 WOOT! :D

Personally, its the realism factor. Characters and environments look more and more real. The story lines of some games are so indepth, that its better than watching a movie, cause your directing(somewhat, depending on the game)how the story unfolds. Add in online multiplayer, and its a new story/movie everytime you play. The video game industry is a multibillion money maker.

The PSP was the beginning of hard times for Sony and the PS3 is going to make it worse before it gets better. A price tag in excess of $600 and only 400,000 units available world wide with no more being release until 1st quarter 2007. People are going to take their money and invest it in either the 360 which has a year head start, many more games and is less $$ or the WII which will have 4 million units available for Christmas and is half the price. Not to mention you'll be able to play pretty much ANY Nintendo game ever on it. It is directly compatable with Game Cube and all other games from previous hardware platforms are available online. It took 5 years for the PS1 sales to decline, 4 years for PS2........1 year for PSP sales to decline. I doubt Sony has broken even on that little piece of hardware. If they are not careful the PS3 high cost of developement, delayed release date, limited numbers, and uncertain future (as in they still don't know when or how many more they'll be able to release), and lack of new games - could really see Sony hurting.

Honestly as long as all your considered with is more realistic environoments and cooler graphics - well you're never going to grow your fan/user base. They need to take a page from Nintendo's book who've kept their R&D costs down and have really thought about the games themselves and have very successfully started marketing their games to everyone from 5 year olds to 65 year olds. Very smart move on their part. The games are what make the companies money - not the hardware.

Why can't these guys agree on anything? They have their Memory Stick as well, instead of using something compatible with other systems.
Future Shop has a Samsung display with a HD or Blue Ray player showing movies on a plasma tv. Oddly, the TV only has 1366x768 resolution. You would expect them to use a 1920x1080 to show the format at it's best.
