They still have plans for a bridge, most of it floating, but the smaller islands are against having them go through their land.

I like the ferries as well but sometimes the 2 hour trip can put a damper on travel plans, especially if yo have to wait a sailing or two.

Also everyone........

The local residents where this bridge could be built say "Not in my neighborhood." Can you blame them? --- Kev

I think the PEI bridge is in the mid-20km range and I believe Vancouver to the Island is about 40km, so logistically it may not be possible. But then I have heard of a similar bridge in Europe that is about 50km long, I think in Denmark....

The only reason the PEI bridge happened is because it was part of their terms of joining Canada. They wanted a fixed link or they were going to stay independant. The feds procrastinated for many years, and even tried to get out of it, but they eventually gave in because they signed a contract.

We don't want a bridge linking us with the mainland! It would only encourage more of you mainlanders to come over here and rob us of our Island and turn us into another suburbia of Vancouver!

I love it when they jack the ferry rates up. The higher the better, I say. That way, less people will spend the dough to travel on my beautiful Island!

for a fraction of the cost of a fixed link

they could build new ferries (not the shit glen clark ordered) and have later runs ...

right now there are not enough boats, and the corporation still has to subsidize the gulf islands ... they should charge what it costs ... those people living on Salt Spring etc would end up paying about $100 per trip for their car ... that is the stupid economy of the ferry corporation.

The Fast Cat Ferries were suppose to cost a couple of Pesos but ended up costing $2 billion...

The gun registry was suppose to cost a couple of Pesos but ended up costing $2 billion and the cost is still rising...

Can you imagine what this bridge would cost "TAX PAYERS?" Especially if the stupid ass Liberal goverment is in power. We don't need a bridge that bad. --- Kev

Most of us "Islanders" do not want a bridge. The complaining about the ferries usually comes from mainlanders. My recommendation is - move to the island or learn to live with it.

economics issue..., the government then have to put a large sum up front..., anyhow, I agree with building a bridge the the Confederation Bridge between PEI and NB...so the ferry strikes won't effect any delay in all aspects.

wow! yer a fucking idiot!
The waterways and the ferry system are a integral part of the beauty of Vancouver Island.

I believe the slow ferry ride heightens the anticipation of what awaits that makes it all that much more fun.

See what I mean?

If you would actually check a map, Victoria is quite a ways south of Vancouver. If you were to Island hop at a ,ore convenient place, there would still be a couple of hours travel time to get to and from the bridge. Because of the geographic and oceanographic conditions, the engineering would be very expensive. So, while a bridge is technically feasible, it is a finacial impossibilty

I believe the last report I saw on the bridge stated that it would take approximately 45 minutes to travel from Tswassen to Duncan. Duncan to Victoria is roughly 60 minutes... So, approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Tswassen to Victoria.

Ferry ride, 1 hour and 45 minutes, and 25 to 30 minutes from Swartz bay to Victoria. So, you save the 25 to 30 minutes by the bridge, not including the time to wait for the next sailing which I usually get there 1 hour before sailing on slow days, 90 minutes to 2 hours on busy days.

Just some food for thought.

Vancouver - sort of
Confederation Bridge

While an engineering marvel on its own, the Confederation Bridge from PEI to NB is simplicity in the extreme compared to the challenges faced in tring to bridge to Vancouver Island. To begin with, Northumberland Strait is very shallow as compared to Georgia Strait.

While on holiday, spring 1996, managed to get a tour around the construction site, marveling at the techniques employed in building the sections of the bridge. They even used motive power similar to that used to move the Saturn rockets at Cape Canaveral.

I have several pics of the site that I am willing to share if anyone is interested.
