Is Vancouver the worst city for young people in Canada?

Personally, I think Vancouver is a poor city to live in for young people...unless they have a family that will buy them a shitty overpriced house in Burnaby for 900k, which was 300k 7 yrs ago...?!?!

Since Vancouver has become the city of the have and have nots, I recommend the following large cities in Canada as an alternative to live, and actually afford to own things...

1. Halifax
2. Calgary
3. Victoria

You get what you pay for. It's a great city, and yeah, it's expensive. It's not necessarily a bad city for young people, it's just a bad city for lazy people. If you want that 900k house, go to school, work hard and get yourself a great paying job.

^ Hell ya!

I love Vancouver. I don't care that it's expensive- so I'll live in a smaller place. Big deal. I like small places.

In this case, you don't get what you pay for.
You can buy a more beautiful and larger home in any other Canadian city for less than in Vancouver or Toronto.
Montreal is reasonably priced and is culturally more interesting. Escorts are much hotter and less expensive as well.

In 4 to 5 years you may have already missed the boat by then. Right now I can get double for my place than what I would have five years ago.

Mr Mustangjoe, you are missing the whole point of my post. I am stating in Vancouver, you don't get what you pay for these days...you get extremely overpriced property, and some of it leaks!

Don't get me wrong...I am not arguing whether Vancouver is not a nice city, but clearly for the large majority of young people, their standard of living can be increased 100% or more, by living elsewhere...and for those of you who plan on having children, I wish you good luck!

Vancouver is a great city and it's costly because of the demand to live in Vancouver. Like many other highly desirable places to live the price of property will increase with the demand. The price of real estate in Vancouver may level off but will probably not decline significantly due to the demand. For sure, any decline will be short lived and should be considered as a buying opportunity.

Young people need to learn how to trade up when living in any city with high property prices. First buy a starter home, when the price raises, sell it and with the profits buy a more expensive home and continue the process until you have reached a level of satisfaction.

So, I agree with MustangJoe, you can't be lazy and make it in Vancouver or for that matter any place that is in high demand.

Why is Vancouver in demand? Pacific Rim, West Coast, near Seattle, great universities, fair weather, great to do business, Olympics, lots to do, film industry, and on and on. Vancouver is a great city.

Calgary as a cheap alternative? Come on people, you are kidding right? Sure it may not quite be up to Vancouver prices but sure the hell not far behind and catching up fast.

It would be a shame for all that arable land to be paved over. It's happening in the Okanagan too.

Prices

All I can say is:
Victoria? Cheap? Have to take a boat or plane anytime you want tot go anywhere;

Calgary: Cheap? not anymore, and prices are climbing and..... 6 months of cold winter and wind 6 months of hot summer

Halifax: 8 months of winter.

If you enjoy city life and an outdoor lifestyle, (which can mean anything from sipping a latte on a sidewalk or peddling up a mountain) Vancouver is where its at. And because a lot of people desire that - it costs.

Cheers

are you always drunk or just really stupid?

a lot of people who have good paying jobs cannot afford Vancouver anymore, and may not appreciate the 'lifestyle' when they have horrid commutes, expensive housing and no time to enjoy it.

take a look at cities in the US where this happened: sure, those who 'benefitted' from some dubious luck in high tech did well, but teachers, nurses, firemen, cops etc -- the bread and butter of the 'middle-class' -- couldn't afford a cardboard box to live in.

even the well-off anesthesiologists are complaining because they can make more money and live someplace cheaper in any other province in Canada ... and those that live elsewhere don't want to come to Van even with the 'lifestyle' because they don't want such a drastic drop in pay and rise in expenses.

and if we start 'paying' the middle-classes what it costs to live in Vancouver, our taxes are going to go through the roof!

I used to think that the 20 somethings were going to have an easy life, but the way things are going, they are going to be supporting a bunch of old farts and paying huge bucks for a shitty place to live on crappy wages.

You guys all have excellent comments.....I'll add mine....Vancouver is a beautiful city in terms of looks......but when it comes to value and all.....I agree with some above comments.....it's way over valued in my opinion....and the other thing i'll add that no one has....is the traffic !!!!!! I've been visiting Vancouver for all of my life and now living here for over 15 years.......congestion is getting and has gotten way worse!! Those two bridges that they are building...are not going to solve everything...I mean the out flow near the port mann going out will be fine.......I talking about the internal part of the city!!! we're 2 million people now....wait another 10 - 15 years!! I don't see any improvement there.....I'll take forever to get to some places!!AN don't forget...the more things this Government adds to improve everything here.....our taxes rise and rise....that's no value!!Standard of living hasn't kept up to all of the rising tides in this city....watch the news and read the Business papers....
I don't even go there about the sky train and buses!!! They don't go to all places.....buses would be great...but not enough!!!

Low interest rates....foreign Buyers...and there is an Olympic premuim built it...If Interest rates really start to go up..look out.....we're seeing it the states already.....various places in the states have reported OVER 20% drops in home prices!!....I would like to see somewhat of a pull back in real estate here....it's only healthy.....but I sure hope it doesn't crash......alot of people will be holding the shit end of the stick!!!

Many...many...people in Vancouver are not living the high life as one or some people on here might think.....most of them are just getting buy!!!!

Vancouver
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah..................:D

The question was "Is Vancouver the worst city for young people in Canada?"

not whether it's the worst city for old farts

young people are not a monolithic group, some will leave, some will stay.......some need and want to be here no matter what the rent and cost of housing.....other factors enter the decision, like where do you have better career opportunities, where are you more likely to meet and associate with people who share your interests, where are you more likely to get laid by someone really interesting, where are you more likely to have access to art, music, fashion, drugs, education, intellectual discourse, specialized cultural niches.....and so forth

the smartest, most resorceful and most talented young people find a way.....the ones who can't hack it go somewhere else

I know some young people working two jobs after years of university. Mustangjoe u probably lucked out and baught your home early on and dont have to pay these rediculous prices. Most young people in Vancouver have missed the boat and can only afford apartments.

ya .....you hit the nail right on....young people who don't yet or don't think about money as an issue yet.....I work with many...many...young people....and that's exactly how they think....in my 20's ...I never thought about money like I do now.....The main thing your missing is this.....Vancouver is extremley more expensive as it was 10 - 20 years ago and beyond....people wages haven't kept pace....20 years ago you could buy a house for $ 150,000 ....forget about it now unless you want to move out 80 miles away or live in a condo for the rest of your life....
With the prices of some houses here.....many people don't even make that much in a life time.....net income wise that is....
Being smart sometimes has nothing to do with it.....it's what's real and what you have now.....wel're all smart in different ways......You can't buy life experience....you have to live and learn it!!
I'm 40 and still learning....but living.....:) :) :p
