Is it necessary to tip on Take Out?

Curious to know if it's common place or if it's necessary to tip on Take Out at non Fast Food Restaurants e.g., Italian, Chinese, Greek, etc.? I know that for certain restaurants the wait staff have to pay a certain percentage of their orders back to the kitchen staff and support staff to help out with tips but does this pay out also include Take Out orders?

Anyway if you do Tip on Take Out, then what is the appropriate amount to tip?

Usually when eating in, I tip accordingly:

(1) Average service: 10%
(2) Good Service: 15%
(3) Excellent Service like chatting up the customer and really making an effort make to provide good service: 20% or more
(4) Indifferent Service: less than 10%

I just round up, and round it up higher if there is no added delivery charge. Some places do free delivery, some don't, so for the ones that do I can't justify a driver tip along with the $2-3 added on by the place already.

I don't usually judge a delivery driver on good or indifferent service levels, they are just bringing the food.

Oh, yah, okay, read it after your post. On Take out, I never tip ever.
The price is the price, imo, and I went to the trouble of picking it up and now it will be luke warm when I get it home, I'm not tipping for that lol.

Apparently the average eat-in restaurant tip in Canada is 15% (can't quote the reference as I forget it now).

In any case, I don't tip for take-out.

For takeout I tip 10%, the hostess is responsible for getting the order ready to go and generally are paid shit.
Since I am not paid shit, I don't mind at all.

For drivers about 15%. Places that charge $2-3 for delivery don't actually give that money to the drivers.
If everyone thinks thats acceptable instead of a tip. Drivers would be making less than minimum wage once you consider wear and tear on their vehicle.

Race to the bottom Canada....make sure these minimum wage employees don't get one cent more than you have to.

Just to clarify I wasn't necessarily talking about delivery but take out specifically i.e., phoning in to place an order and then going to the establishment to pick up the food. For example, I placed an order at Banana Leaf. The charge was $17. I handed the waitress $20 and she responded with 'do you want change?'.

I never tip when I am picking up take out. I am pretty sure putting a couple of styrofoam boxes in a plastic bag does not constitute service...

That's stupid, should never be asked, always automatic change given.

When I do take out, regardless of bill amount I would just leave from zero up to a few bux for organizing my bags well or something.

If I go in to pick it up, absolutely not. If it is delivered, I will tip up to $2 or to cover gas, whichever is less. If companies want to make delivery as part of their service they SHOULD compensate the driver accordingly but I know they don't so I don't mind helping a working stiff with a couple of bucks.

I live in the suburbs, so, there's always a delievery charge of $5. So, no, I don't tip.
Did you even READ the OP's main point?.....he was talking about PICK UP ORDERS...where you physically show up to pick up your order.

Personally I think tipping has gotten out of hand to say the least....you have workers in a Starbucks that want a tip when your are paying $5 for a fancy cup of coffee( oh but they dont make a lot of money....yeah well tough shit they chose their manicure safe job...if they want more money the world needs ditch diggers too) also you have fricken barbers/beauticians that expect tips for merely doing their jobs.....a decent haircut costs upwards of $50 and they expect a fucking tip....give me a break....the straw that breaks this camel's back is the day when I place an order for take out food and a tip is expected from me....cripes I will just plain snap......I have to tip someone who places my food in a bag after I have gone through the effort to drive to the place to pick it up......that is not going to happen.

As Mr.Pink says " I have worked at a lot of jobs that were not deemed tip worthy"....yeah well I am in the same fucking boat.....I have had countless shitty jobs in my life that were not "tip worthy"....my current job is not "tip worthy" (though it is not shitty) but I do occasionaly get tipped but it is not something I expect. What next on the horizon?.....do you have to start tipping your unionized city employed garbage man for doing his highly paid job so that your garbage can does not get thrashed?

End of rant.

I don't tip for pick up/take out. Round up on delivered food usually, and I usually tip if I've enjoyed myself if I'm dining in. There have really only been a handful of occasions where the food or service was so bad I didn't leave any tip. I once found out my takeout chicken cutlet wasn't even a cutlet. Little a bit of chicken deep fried and 70% of the chunk was burnt batter.

Since we're on the topic of tips, on average how many tips do you think an SP gets? I tipped one SP once and she was really surprised, went on to say that only other guy had tipped her before in the time she'd been working (I think for over a year lol).

Would tipping an SP be considered tipping on eating in? :D

:thumb: I totally agree, but if I go to a restaurant regularly and the service and food are consistently good I usually add a dollar or round up to a even dollar amount. IE: If the total is $8.74 I round up to $10.00.

I usually tip the hot young Koreans at that have taken over the Calgary Starbucks scene (the ones I frequent, anyhow) They light up, especially when I thank them in Korean (with a heavy western accent). Makes for a smooth segue into who's who in K-Pop without looking like a clumsy Uncle-Fan.

BTW, you may have consumed more spit than the average person if you are a regular take out client and never tip in any form... I don't ever fuck with people who have anything to do with my food. I just factor in 15% is added always, more if service is exceptional. I will grind to save on real estate, automobiles, etc. but I don't see how I gain by withholding a few bucks on a takeout order...

another point of view for just putting your stuff in a bag,.... they could be busy trying to earn a big tip but have to stop their table so that they can:

a) take your order over the phone or in person
b) keep tabs on the order
c) prep it for pick up
d) take your payment

It's not like they are doing nothing for you. In a way, take out is like butting in line

I think most starbucks or coffee places I goto, have donation tins for charity rather than a tip jar

I got a bit pissed offwhen I noticed a tip jar placed next to the donation box at Tim Hortons when I went in the other day...

Actually I rarely get take out and I dine out even less as I have seen a huge amount of kitchens over the years and quite a lot of them are just plain nasty.I do tip the pizza guy though as I know what his job is like.

That she would ask the question is ludicrous.

You might as well tip the cashier at the Safeway checkout because s/he put groceries in a bag for you.

Ain't that the truth! Dirty floors, built-up grime, re-used oil. A lot of the folks preparing the food... well, the sight of them would make you cringe.

And, if they are having a bad day, what do you think their mentality might be? and how might it affect the food on the plate that arrives on your table?
