So i saw Cherry on HNIC last night, WOW! Think poor ol Don's time to be led out to pasture has come. Don't get me wrong, i use to enjoy ol Don back in the day.Unfortunately all he seems to do now is wag his finger at everybody now, kinda like the ol kook at the end of the street yelling at all the kids on the street playing hockey.
It's kinda sad now watching him, just never seems to make much sense anymore.CBC doesn't really care, they'll just keep rolling him out there till the ratings on his segment start to drop. Maybe ol Don got into some of Charlies tiger blood?
So come on all you good Canadian kids out there, lets hear your opinion.
I blame it on the liberals & the HST!

i think you answered your own question. When the rating drop the answer will be no, until then, obviously people are watching him.

Replace Don with Krustee on HNIC and we get:

1. less sadness
2. less hockey smarts
3. less in ratings

4. more sense
5. more laughs
6. more hooker talk

I'd like to know what NHLers are seeing SP's. Also when, where, what, why & who.

I learned something in English class in High School, when we were studying Shakespeare.

In almost all the plays, whenever there was tension or the scene was at a (imperial) court, there would always be someone to make people laugh. Like a village idiot, or a court jester.

The people who run the NHL know what they're doing. They know Don Cherry likes to dress like a clown and they let him do it. They know he likes to mouth off because he's a blowhard. They know the fans need to see a joker during intermissions.

I prefer sexy cheerleaders in skimpy suits, but somehow ice hockey doesn't lend itself to that.

Don can stay only if he wears a maple leaf outfit with blue/white pom poms.

Otherwise he is totally irrelevant.

""It's hard to get too jazzed about this because I think Don's mutterings are kind of akin to that of an old uncle that nobody takes seriously anymore. I'm not going ot get too fired up about it.

"Despite the fact that Don's credibility is ... I don't know if he had a great deal of credibility, any he did have certainly eroded today, that's at least my view. But if you're going to come out with language that strong and say things that just completely without any basis in fact or reality, I think you have to answer for it."

"..."If he wants to be part of the debate, I don't think name-calling and singling folks out as 'pukes' and 'hypocrites' is really a helpful way to drive the discussion and maybe one day help to resolve the issue. Frnakly, I'm not sure why Don would even be considered part of the debate. Here's a guy that never played a day in the NHL. I don't know that's he's got any experience playing this role over a stretch of time. What is it that provides him with this extensive background to be the voice of authority in this area?"

Don Cherry is nothing other than pure entertainment. Don Cherry is shock broadcasting as much as anything. The only reason I think he's got the kind of follwing he does, he really is unchecked in the way he's able to broadcast his viewpoint. He gets on, he sounds off. Nobody's there to hold him accountable, least of all Ron MacLean. I think there's a lot of folks who find that entertaining, but take it for what it is."

I almost get the sense a lot of folks tune in wondering No. 1, what he's doing to say next and wondering No. 2, is this gonna be the comment he makes that's finally going to be his undoing. He tends to kinda tow close to that line and I think there will come a point he eventually steps over that line and CBC says, 'You know what, it might just be time to shut the old uncle down.'"

Don is like a fixture in the hockey world, especially if a game is boring, at least his job is to bring some drama and excitement to the 3 hours tv viewers are stuck with

Don, like HNIC is part of the entertainment package.
Out of curiosity, do any of the US networks pick up on his review (or comments) any more?

This last round of name-calling should've got him pulled off the air.
It was nice to see the "pukes" take the high-road.

I used to really respect Don Cherry and thought his word was Gospel. In recent years his segment on HNIC has deteriorated to nothing more than a schill for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His worthless predictions about how good the Leafs will be, how the game is ruined and his constant replaying vidoes to back up his worthless views has now resulted in Coaches Corner being a good time to use the bathroom or get another beer.

The man is a hypocrite and a liar. If a Toronto or Boston player do something dirty in a game they are old time players, but if the same deed is done by a player on any other team they are dirty cowards. He crossed the line on Thurday night with his rant against these 3 players and i will no longer watch his program or take him seriously again. Time for CBC to move on, he should have been off the air a decade ago.

John Garrett is the same. A Canuck player can do no wrong, but the same action is a penalty against a Canuck. His homerism is really annoying, but I guess that's what they want. Same for Cherry - somebody thinks his comments are relevant. There must be enough ratings they think he's worth keeping. Personally, I stopped listening to Cherry about 5 years ago. Coaches corner is a time to go for a snack.

You guys are missing the point, he is supposed to be a polarizing figure, always has been, always will be. If you are looking for gravitas, you are not going to get it from Don Cherry. He is a champion for players' safety (except fighting, example - advocating no touch icing), the plumbers/pluggers/4th liners/fighters and the Canadian military amongst other things. Plus he sucked when he was coaching against the Habs:D. I think his relevancy is irrelevant.
