Is Dick Cheney planning ahead?

Today, speaking about Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon, Dick Cheney said the following:

"It was this man, Gerald R. Ford, who led our republic safely though a crisis that could have turned to catastrophe," said Cheney, speaking in the Capitol Rotunda where Ford's body rested. "Gerald Ford was almost alone in understanding that there can be no healing without pardon."

If you're angling for a future pardon for your criminal role in the destruction of Iraq, you'd better hope an extreme right wing Republican wins the presidency in 2008, Dick. You won't be getting one from anyone who doesn't have those special I-know-I'm-right-because-I-say-I'm-right blinkers on, that's for sure.

In the long run Ford's pardon of Nixon, I think, was a huge mistake. With Ford's death people are getting all touchy-feely-sensitive over what is perhaps his notable act as the US President. While a trial for Nixon would have been tumultous for the US the need to show that EVEN the president is NOT above the law and faced trial may sent a good message to all future politicians that don't fuck with the system so much.

Cheney like Rumsfeld came out of the Nixon/Ford era with a deep distain. They believed that the President should become more powerful. That leaves me wondering that a more powerful president is then more able to do wrong things and be better able to cover them up.

Also which prez was it that pardoned Casper Weinbereger and others for their role in the Iran-Contra affair? Reagan or Bush 1?
