okay ... have a pic ... want to crop it ... used the zoom in feature and then tried to sharpen it and once i recovered from the acid flashback i realized that wasn't going to work ... so then tried to select with the mouse to create a box and keep the pic in the box and delete what's outside ... now i have a pic that is still not the right size with a big black border around it.

and i did try resizing it but that wasn't much better.

That happened to me too with this program.
I had to use Irfanview once at work and couldn't justify to the boss the purchase of Photoshop Elements.
Many of these types of programs consider the "original" size as the "canvas" and when you use the mouse to select a smaller box, you get the picture in isolation, but unfortunately the rest of the canvas looks black. Like a giant thick black border around your picture.
Assuming that you've saved this black border picture, or even if you are starting with your original picture...
You need to find somewhere in the Irfanview menu is the option that lets you crop/shrink the canvas. Not to be confused with the option that lets you "scale" down the image proprotionately.

thanks ... found it in the File drop-down menu ... works very well for a free-ware program ...

BDA ...

the resize is different from what i was trying to accomplish ... i did make the picture smaller but it did not remove all the excess picture that i didn't want ... that's what the cropping does ...

otherwise the program works great ... just removed my abode crap from the computer.
