Max is 3 to 6% unless you are a valued client then you may get another 1 -2%.
Most dealers work off 8-12% margins so there isn't much to play with, especially if the car is in high demand then there will be no discounts.

Good Luck

Umm....you have got enough cash to buy this car for someone (not for yourself) and you are worried about the discount? The gift sex in response to such a car would be pretty astronomical, no? :)

325i is too weak in HP/Torque for the big $$$ BMW demands. Either pony up for the 330i or look elsewhere for a better bargain.

People like Maury didn't get enough cash to buy this car for someone by always paying full price.

Part of it is the satisfaction that you made the best deal possible. I recently disputed a $167 ticket... Everybody was getting convicted left right and center... the judge was a total asshole... so at the last moment, I took the prosecutor aside and we struck a deal for $150 and no record on my license... it wasn't the $17 savings, it was just a thrill that I was the only person out of 15 or so to be able to get a reduction in the fine and no record. Even guys like trump continue to try to get the best possible deal because when you get to that level, it's a game. I hope to one day get there as well.

I'm assuming this car is for a special lady friend of Maury's and therefore I doubt HP/Torque is of concern for her.

And since it's a gift, I guess that is one of the exceptions to not buying new... ladies generally don't like used gifts.

I don't see why a 325i which is fairly common can't be bought at a decent discount. It's usually the rare cars like the M3's and M5's that either get sold at slightly under MSRP, exactly at MSRP, but more often than not, OVER MSRP.

My suggestion is find the dealer that has the cheapest rent... in other words, avoid downtown Vancouver and West Vancouver... usually the best deals can be found in the suburbs... perhaps Brian Jessel in Langley. Go in there, make sure you deal with the owner/sales manager directly or his "right hand man", show you're serious about buying the car today, know what his cost is, what you want to pay, and then get the deal done... and be prepared to walk away if u don't like what u hear... usually, the next day they will be calling u back for your business.

I recently had a similar experience where I made a very fair offer on a car and they wouldn't budge... I walked away, and they called me every day for 2 weeks trying to sell me the car at a price that was $800 lower than their "final offer." In the end, I actually found a better deal elsewhere and in the exact color I wanted, so screw those guys.

Thank you everyone for the fine advice. You're right Mav, performance is not an issue in this particular case; I should have mentioned that. Creature comforts on the other hand, are. Another car has reared its "beautiful" head on the horizon. The Lexus IS250 costs about $5K less, and is loaded with features that make BMW pale in comparison. The problem here is a new Coupe is not due in the showrooms until next year. Man, the Japanese sure know how to carve a masterpiece.

Forget Dealers

Try talking to an Auto Broker / Leasing Agent. They should be able to save you a minimum of 5% (probably more as they have no overhead and can buy from the dealers at "FLEETLEASE" rate.) They can get all makes, new and used and off-lease.

That is what I did for my last 2 cars

Hope this helps.

The world needs more people like Maury. Aside from giving special lady friends wonderful gifts, I'm sure he also gives to his fair share of charitable causes.

BTW, Maury, I cannot PM you since you have it disabled. Please email me at HateMavYet@gmail.com. I wanna talk to you about something.

Man, I just signed up for that account and the freakiest thing occurred... it asked me to type in an 8 letter verification... u know, the ones with the funky distorted letters to ensure a human being is actually creating the account? Well, guess what my 8 letter verification was? It was:

perbstsi .... the last 4 letters resemble the letter designation on my vehicle... and it's like the little green man behind the gmail account verification terminal knew I was on PERB while signing up.... something weird is goin' on tonight man...

It was pretty damn freaky I'll tell u that... I mean what are the odds?

One more thing I wanted to add as a piece of advice to Maury. You can usually figure out the relative "operational costs" of a dealership by talking to the parts and service department. When you own a car dealership, you are essentially in the business of selling car parts and servicing cars, not selling cars. The dealers make relatively little on selling cars and it's a 1 shot deal... the residual income comes from servicing and parts.

Call a few BMW dealers and get a quote for a certain part... say a transmission or a headlight or whatever.. there is usually a BMW standardized MSRP, but some dealers will jack that up a bit more depending on location. Also ask for the service department and get a quote on a common job (besides the oil change, which most places do at below cost just so they can build a relationship with you to get you to trust them to do other stuff)... or if you're lazy, just ask them what they charge per hour labour... the ones in the suburbs are usually a bit cheaper and therefore u can sort of gauge which dealerships you may be able to get a better deal from.

I also suggest "practicing" on 1-2 of the more expensive dealers before taking your final hand to the dealer u want to make the final deal with... that way u are armed with more knowledge and you can smoke him. Nothing more satisfying than smoking your opponent in a business deal ;).

The side benefit is the 1-2 you practiced on will likely call u within 1-2 days and offer to come down on their final offer.. it is then that u will see their TRUE FINAL offer... you can say you're looking at other options... in which case u will have 2-3 dealerships BIDDING for your business... but don't tell them which other dealerships u are dealing with or that u are even fixed on a BMW (just make it sound u are looking at other types of cars as well... or at the very least, just say you're considering an offer from 1 other BMW dealer, but don't say the exact one...)... otherwise, sometimes the 2-3 dealerships will conspire against u and agree not to go below a certain threshold to force your hand at one of them...

Oh, and 1 more thing... if u don't get the final MONETARY value u wanted, try to negotiate stuff like accessories (floor mats, upgraded stereo, stuff like that) or even service (eg. included maintenance for X amount of kms, etc.)... lots of ways to get creative.

And most important of all... HAVE FUN!!!

That's why my new moniker is "hate me yet?" and my new hatemail address is hatemavyet@gmail.com.

I'm actually not that bad a guy... I'm a fair guy... a good deal is when both sides are happy... I just like to make sure I'm on the slightly happier side ;).
