Almost two decades after the show last aired in 1994, Fox announced Friday that the network will bring back sketch comedy series In Living Color as "two half-hour specials airing in the spring of 2012." The exact air dates have not yet been confirmed, and the success of the reboot will determine whether or not the show will be ordered to series for next fall or mid-season.
Keenan Ivory Waynes will host the new episodes. He was the original series' creator and will serve as executive producer on the revived version. However, he will be the only familiar face returning. According to Fox, the show will have a new cast featuring "fresh, young talent" with special musical guests.
The original series helped launch several careers including the Waynes brothers, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier and Jim Carrey. Among the Fly Girls were Jennifer Lopez and Dancing With the Stars' Carrie Ann Inaba. Debuting in 1990, In Living Color was a groundbreaking series that focused on black subject matter. Jim Carrey was actually only one of two white cast members, playing the clumsy Fire Marshal Bill.
It will be interesting to see if they will recast the same roles with new actors or carve out brand new characters. Either way, with one of the Waynes brothers at the helm, it'll be nothing short of hilarious.
