China has along way to go before it catches up to the west in many regards. I have a friend from Shanghai who told me recently that she really enjoyed watching Mad Men (an excellent series that takes place during the 60's in New York, centering on a MADison avenue advertising firm) because in many ways it mirrored life in modern day Shanghai. In other words, she believes that China is about 50 years behind the west in many respects.

She has told me stories about how women are treated in Shanghai that you would not believe could still exist in such a modern looking city. For example, how many young women accept being a mistress for their manager to get ahead in the company they are working for (Mad Men has similar stories). She told me that some influential managers might have half a dozen or more of these mistresses in their employee. She also tells me that many women are coming to Vancouver, children in tow, while their husbands stay in China, ostensibly to earn a living, but she believes many if not most of these men then get mistresses. The men rationalize sending their wives to Vancouver so that their children can get better education and escape the pollution ever present in most major Chinese cities ( http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/04/asia/...y-disappears-after-military-parade/index.html ). Then when they come to visit their family in Vancouver, they expect to be served hand and foot while here (their here on their vacation after all) and wonder why they wives are pissed off at them. Their wives are learning from their Canadian friends how badly their being taken advantage of ;-(

I have lots of other stories from my friend, but I think you get the idea. BTW, she did say that a lot of these married Chinese women here in Vancouver have time and money, and would be open to taking on a "male friend" to keep them company. Something to keep in mind guys :)

I'm not sure when a life was only worth $30,000 here in North America though.

The article is the truth for sure. I have a work colleague that went to Shanghai to work about a dozen years ago. He decided he was going to get a car and insurance. He asked for the same insurance coverage that he would get here in Canada including the $2M liability. Long story short, they wanted to know just how many people he planned on killing with such ridiculously high coverage as a life was only worth $25K at the time.
