I'm told I might need a dental implant of a back tooth. Has anyone had this done, and what was the experience like? I know it takes months to complete, so how do you eat in the meantime missing a tooth?

Old story I'd rather forget about but years back I had 2 teeth in the back part of my lower jaw shattered. Went through getting the bridge and all that entailed. Had to chew on the other side for months. Then a few years ago, one of the anchor teeth for part of the bridge had a problem and needed a root canal. So ... the bridge comes out, the bad tooth gets dug out and now I have 3 in a row to fix. All done now and a really good job too but I went through some serious hell because I had the wrong dentist. And THAT may be the biggest deal. Make sure you do not have a drillem fillem fucker who gives a rat ass about your health. If I recall the bastard said I needed gum grafts on every fucking tooth - cost 20 fucking grand plus I think it was about 13 G for the new implants. The good dentist said no I do not need grafts and with the new digital tech (3D of your mouth then a 3D printer to make the mock up for the tech to build your new teeth) the final cost for the implants was way below that value and thankfully my health plan covered it all. So there was still some pooning budget.

Front for me. 5 k is my cost and about a year long process. I cracked a cap, likely caused by biting down on the breathing tube during cardiac surgery. I was advised this could happen. Cosmetically i really have no choice. Right now its just loose but won't get better, I considered other options like a bridge, less costly would need to destroy 2 other teeth for an anchor though.

Not a fan of the other kind either :)

Had a quote for one of the front tooth over 10 yrs ago. The whole process would have taken a year or longer as it involved graft, and the cost 6K+. I bailed out and got partial instead.

I had a lower jaw infection where 3 lower teeth in the back had to be removed. Took a year to heal and install implants and everything. You adapt rather quickly to eating from the other side of your mouth. Unfortunately, I didn't lose any weight.

I had my front one done over 10 years ago. Eating was not a problem as they put in a temporary removeable one till the job was done.
My only complaint was that I liked the look of the temp better than the permanent one.

Yes. Colour matching is a huge deal as teeth are real fuckers re colour reflectivity gloss etc.

Had one done back around 2002. Lower right, 2nd molar from the back. Cost then was $2500. Nearly 25 years later it's still good. Had another one done 2 years ago in Mexico. Same molar but upper right. Cost 32000 pesos or about CDN$2500. Cost back home was going to be around $6500.

I had 3 done about 15 years ago costing 10k and have had no issues.
I was fortunate to have been seeing a dentist at the UBC dental clinic. He referred me to a surgeon in Burnaby.

Unfortunately, both have retired when COVID hit.

I haven't found a decent dentist since and would appreciate any information about your good dentist.

Follow the instructions from your surgeon and dentist and surgeon carefully. Bad infections can be very miserable and possibly quite expensive. My brother found out the hard way.

Best of luck!😊

Can't help you with the dentist from 2002. He was splitting time between PG and Whistler back then. He closed shop in PG and moved elsewhere, possibly to Okanagan. First name was Michael. Last name was something like Fernandez or Hernandez.

I’ve had 3 molars done. The first 2 cost 5k each and were not covered by insurance. The process took about 6 months as they have to wait for the hole to heal. I just chewed on one side of my mouth, felt weird at first but was pretty easy to get used to. The last one cost a bit more because they had to do a bone graft first. (The sound of that drilling was terrifying but I didn’t feel a thing) By the time I was getting that one, some insurance companies had started covering a portion, so I got 2k off the cost which helped immensely. All 3 are doing great, the colour matches perfectly and I have zero regrets. I am careful not to eat super hard crunchy things because I don’t want to break them but haven’t had any problems with things like chips or crunchy veggies. Probably wouldn’t be good to crunch on things like hard candies or corn nuts, but I don’t eat those anyway. Be careful with popcorn as sometimes you get a unpopped kernel in your handful!

My endontist was amazing, feel free to dm me for his info.

Bought about 10 crowns since 2010 at about $1200 each. Metal or ceramic. Some really big fillings came out first. Considerably less invasive although I haven't met anyone with both to say one way or the other. Going into your own bone material to screw in an implant just sounds so unnecessary and expensive. About 10 days to outsource after measurement. The dentist shapes the tooth and makes a temporary crown in office same day. Be careful with the temporary not to eat anything too succulent. The vacuum created can pull the temporary off. One came off on me. Dentist pressed cord between root and gum to get the gum out of the way to press the new tooth on. Solid. Crush anything you like. Brush and floss daily. Have to keep the gum line clean yet.
