Strangers helping anybody in distress - you'd bloody well better.

Help out your favourite cause - you should, whenever you can.

A few minutes here or there - not a problem. Help out a casual aquaintance.

Reqesting a given service which you need, and would normally have to pay for - if it does not fit into the above, you're probably going to have to pay for it.

Asking for a stranger to move a small suite from downtown Vancouver to Surrey? At his time (couple of hours at least), vehicle expense, insurance and injury risk, etc? A moving company would want a couple of hundred at least. Probably worth about an hour of someone's time.
