We as Canadians should be disgusted with Darren and TELUS..... record profits each quarter the last 3 years but every year is and pricne increae to 'continue to provide service and expand infrastructue'....... Its the same damn reason every increase....

On top of that.... Telus has walked away from bargaining with it local employees and set uo even more call centre's overseas..... They've essentially told their Canadian workers their not worht shit.... They refuse to get back to the barginning table and recently told their Canadian employees if u do strike, we'll be ok.

Essentially buing cheap labour overseas and having ppl that don't speak proper englsh sell their service.

If that Rogers - Shaw deal goes thru, we can kiss any chance of more competition good bye..... This Liberal government is definitely in bed with Darren and TELUS
As I said ask for someone in Canada and keep the jobs in Canada. If everyone did that there would be no overseas call centres

Still lost in the '60s
I switched my Internet and TV service from Telus to VMEDIA last summer.

For the first six months, the total cost was $68 per month for internet and TV.

Now that the initial 6-month discounts have ended, I'm paying a total of $133/month.

Although I have no complaints with the Internet service, the TV access leaves a bit to be desired.

Still, i'm saving enough over what I used to pay Telus so I can afford lots more frozen pizzas from the grocery store. LOL

Best of luck. I find that the ebbs and flow of the communications companies to be dizzying. The general practice of hiring contractors is done by all of them, and it depends on who you get as the tech.
Couple years back when telus installed their Optik in my building, I was taking to one of my neighbour and their set up was quick and painless…. Mine on the other hand, was the exact opposite. The guy wanted to hot glue a wire from my entry closet, along the ceiling across my living room, cause he had no idea what the duck he was doing. I even showed him my neighbors set up where the guy tied into what was already there, and behind the ways and he said “I don’t know how he did it.” And I had to wait 2 weeks for another tech to come out and easy peasy, it was set up in 5 minutes… no glue required.

its a shell game
Big INC is posting profits that are out of this world
Inflation is eating up the vast majority of people's livlihood
Taxes, prices, you name it all going up faster than folks can make the money to cover it
Pretty soon it'll be $10 for a latte and another $10 for a scone at your local JJ's, and its not them making the money, its to cover rent and taxes
Where in the fuck did all this shit happen and why is there no outcry?
And will the revolution be televised?
Fuck the fucking fuckers.
/end while kind of the end of rant but not really
FUCK

I've had a ton of billing problems with Optik TV, like I have to check my bill every month, and phone them to knock off false charges every month (PPV stuff, usually). The customer service people are nice enough, but it's always like a minimum 1 hour process to call them and deal with it. The PVR records things I never asked for too. Also the boxes needed replacing and I swear only one of the techs they sent seemed to know what he was doing. Do some of the workers have something going where they black-market clone their boxes, and charge PPV's to customers' accounts and just expect them to overlook it and pay?

And yeah, fuck what they are doing with / to health care. They should stay in their telecom lane, and take care of that shit properly.

A few years ago, Telus wired up the whole building with fibre-optic. No idea if it was Kiewit. I thought Kiewit was a construction contractor.
Kiewit is a construction contractor but they do all sorts of jobs including infrastructure.

Share price is not merely a function of profit. Telecom is more akin to a utility company - therefore, it is in no way comparable to "tech", which usually represents high growth (and higher risk in many instances). Same difference with "banks" - they are not akin to telecom or tech. Case in point, tech can soar, and a utility (generally) will not - but when tech tanks, utilities do not/did not tank in the same manner as tech. All three (tech, telecom and bank stocks) are different creatures, all creatures do not behave the same. And if you still believe that a (relatively) low div yield means a company has a profitability issue - well, Microsoft has a lower div yield than Shaw/Rogers/Bell/Telus and the big Canadian banks. No one would ever accuse Microsoft of having a profitability issue - and if one does make such a claim simply based on the fact that Microsoft's div yield is lower than BNS or TD, they would be a fool.
Look at the share price of the telecoms, they fell in the tech bust and with the financial crisis and while they aren't as volatile as pure tech stocks, they also have no where near the stability of utilities or banks. Their earnings per share are half of utilities (like Fortis) and banks (Royal Bank). Also check out the sure and steady increase in Fortis' stock valuation compared to Shaw.
The telecoms have had to invest heavily over the last 30+ years, first transitioning and building out fibre, then buying bandwidth and setting up towers, and then constantly improving capacity to handle 3G, 4G and now 5G which is extremely capital cost heavy. They have had to respond to consumer demands with every advancement in tech, how often do utilities have to do a rebuild?
At the same time they have faced competition from each other, while utilities are generally monopolies, and their cable business has been eroded by streaming services and pirating.

The ever-upwards push for 3G, 5G, 5G is pretty absurd. Meanwhile, rural high speed service is always promised but never delivered, perhaps because they are constantly playing catch-up in the urban areas.

However, the problems I mentioned have nothing to do with any of that. Been a Telus internet customer for many years (since Sympatico, LOL) and never had problems there. Been a Telus phone customer for many more.

The Optik channel selection is decent, the ordering system, and have more options for shows and movies than I could ever actually watch. (I get Amazon Prime for the first time now, as it can be ordered as one of the minor service pack options.)

Not so great on the sports side though - you can either order TSN or Sportsnet, but not both basic ones together, and they will dump a ton of useless sports channels on you you might now want (like golf channels, or TSN/Sportsnet from other time zones, etc). Or else you get a Premium pack that gives you all the sports channels. Hard choice between being an uber-nerd (no sports) or ultra-jock (all sports), with little recourse for the occaisional watcher like me.

But when it comes to Optik's billing fuck-ups , they just seem unable to get it sorted out. I'm not a techie, but after mulling it over (a lot) I swear the problem must be with the ordering method their TV service/ equipment uses. It is just not structured well, and you would think there would be some "Are You sure?" kind of thing or emailed notification/verification process whenever your account is being hit with something that charges money beyond the basic level you are paying for. Instead, the system has a lack of clarity, and no warning for these phantoim orders. Makes me suspicious, that it is deliberate.

I don't love Telus but they're the only game in town for synchronous fiber.
Most households don't require high upload speeds thats why most ISPs all over the world don't prioritize it. People use their internet to browse the web and watch videos and play games and all those activities are more download heavy than upload. So it makes sense for and ISP to provide a higher download speed. Upload speeds only matter when you are uploading a video to YouTube or transferring files to a cloud service.

I don't know your particular use case but you should be fine with shaw fiber 300 which gives 300 download and 100 upload. You might not need the symmetrical speeds that Telus provides.

Oligopoly, to be exact.
Unfortunately Canada seems full of oligopolies from telecom, to banks, to grocery chains, and to airlines (duopoly). They have a great deal of market power and therefore prices are too high and quantity of service is too low. Any suggestions??
