they say the death toll can pass 100 000. That is horrific, saddening.

That's very sad about the devastation in Asia.

I watched those videos and realized that everyone at the beach was too fascinated with the rush of the water to realize what's happening.

I've weather earthquakes closer to that 9.0 they had, and let me tell you, an 8.0 can level buildings in California, even without the tsunami.

I heard from CNN that the waters have gone up the coast of San Diego and other parts of the world.

I hope we all can learn from this situation so that a calamity like this does not happen again.

I`ve been away in Banff for most of the past week on a ski trip. Standing at Citadel Peak at the top of Lookout Mountain at Sunshine Village, and looking out over the spectacular peaks of the Canadian Rockies, gives one an appreciation for the majesty of nature and a sense of perspective in one`s life. We truly are dwarfed by the power and vastness of mother nature. To come back down to civilisation and read about the awful tragedy in Asia drove home that same feeling. The mundane and pitiful complaints of my daily life now seemed banal, petty and laughable compared to the misery that has been inflicted on South Asia by the earthquake and tsunami.

I, as are all of you, am deeply saddened by this tragedy and my heart goes out to the hundreds of thousands of people who have been affected by this devastation. While life here in Canada must inevitably go on, I share Luckydog71`s sentiments in this thread .

With the disaster in SE Asia how can anyone go out and celebrate on NYE.

I did have plans but I just can not do it.

Instead I am staying home and I will donate the money I would have spent to the disaster relief
I also am going to forgo any celebration tonight, and instead donate double the amount I would have otherwise spent to the Canadian Red Cross to aid with the disaster relief. And come midnight I will have a more private contemplative celebration, thanking the world for allowing me to share this milestone with those dear to me in good health, and for extending my lease on this planet by another year.

Happy New Year to all!

what tsunami?

PHUKET, Thailand (Associated Press) — Six days after one of the worst natural disasters in decades, foreign tourists returned to the beaches of the Thai resort island of Phuket on Saturday, frolicking in the waves, riding jet skis, posing for snapshots and sunbathing topless.

let's see - you've saved up all year for that dream vacation, and dammit, you've worked hard and been under incredible stress dealing with Christmas and winter weather. Ya ya, tourism - the so-called lifeblood --- how soon is too soon

I agree, that is a relief although I am very very surprised that it only took 6 days. I was wondering if a lot of people wouldn't be aware of what happened there and therefore didn't cancel their trips, but you would have to be living under a rock to not hear about it. Apparently some were. Lol.

Still, nobody had insurance so the only hope of rebuilding their lives is to carry on as usual. I have to wonder if the bodies have all been cleaned up there, cuz riding a jet ski in water that may be full of surprises is horrifying to me. I have seen scary movies that weren't THAT scary. 300 people still missing and presumed dead...yikes. Most of them from Phi Phi and Koh Lak though, maybe Phuket has finished their clean up. I wanted to go back next Xmas, maybe it will be possible after all...

There are still 3,500 Swedish tourists unaccounted for. Most washed out to sea. --- Kev

Double yikes! I had no idea, it's so hard to find the info on the net. I wish there were sites set up with a list of the confirmed dead, as I still don't know if my dive team survived.

I remembered the (Canadian) camera guy from Princess Divers name was/is Trevor and there was a Canadian named Trevor Thompson treated and released from the phuket hospital, so he may have made it. Still no word on the rest of them. :(

tsunami dead?
swedish touritst dead in tsunami tragedy...
Whatever you can think of will come up with something about "That Day." Heres one link about the number of missing foreigners in Thailand.

Missing Tourists in Thailand

When you think about it this was a very tragic day for Sweden as well as many other nations. With 3,559 Sweds missing and the population of Sweden is only 8 million thats one in every 2285 persons missing in Sweden. In comparison the USA would have to lose 131,000 citizens.:( --- Kev

Beware of the creeps trying to take advantage. Had a phone call this evening from something like the Asian Tsunami Relief Organzition of Canada. Never heard of them and don't give over the phone anyway. Stick with recognized relief agencies.

Yes, Jack Frost, I would go back there, my memories of it are already tainted by what it must look like now so I might as well go see what it looks like when it's rebuilt. The people are so nice there, and it did look like heaven, so maybe now it will look like just any beautiful place. I would like to see who remains too. But it would be sad to remember the tragic loss, so it would be a melancholy trip.

I understand that if you donate to the recognized outfits (Medicins san frontiers, Red Cross, World Vision, etc.) before January 11, the feds will match the donation.

And you still get a tax receipt for 2004 as long as the donation is made by January 11.

The value of an education

Girl pays attention in class, saves hundreds

National Post, with files from news services
Monday, January 03, 2005

Just before Christmas, 10-year-old English schoolgirl Tilly Smith learned all about tsunamis at Danes Hill Prep School.

So when she saw the water quickly recede as she played on the beach on Dec. 26 in Phuket, Thailand, she knew what was coming.

Her warning saved hundreds and she has been beatified as an ''angel of the beach'' by The Sun, a British newspaper.

"I was on the beach and the water started to go funny," Tilly told The Sun from Phuket. "There were bubbles and the tide went out all of a sudden. I recognized what was happening and had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami. I told Mommy."

She said they had to get off the beach immediately. The alert was raised, and prompted the evacuation of Maikhao beach and a nearby hotel.

The beach was one of the few on Phuket where no was killed, The Sun reported.

Tilly's mother, Penny, said she was "very proud" of her daughter, while Tilly's home-room teacher, Robin Parfitt, said she had "wisdom beyond her years.''

Her geography teacher, Andrew Kearney, said he taught Tilly and her fellow students that after the sea was sucked backward, the next five to 10 minutes were crucial for people to survive.

"I'm stunned at the news but so relieved she and her family are safe," he said.

"Tilly is a very bright, level-headed girl. Nothing illustrates her character more than her brave actions in a terrifying situation."

I just thought I would add updates to those who care for Phi Phi Island, that there are some updates on their websites. Thank God, I have been dying to know what's happening there but the before and after pictures are shocking to see.

http://www.ppprincess.com/ppprincess_after_tsunami.htm (Thinking of donating directly.)

http://www.scuba-diving-phi-phi.com/ <----which states that the dive shop only lost one staff member, which is not as bad as I expected, but she was pregnant. :(

My instructor and the Canadian underwater cameraman did survive, thank goodness!

Edited to add that I also felt bad for all the cats that relied on tourists for milk and food (guilty) but I just read an article here that said over 100 stray cats were rescued from Phi Phi island! Can you believe how nice the Thai people are, with all this death and destruction, they still found time to save the cats! They are the nicest people on Earth!!!
