Received my ICBC rebate cheque today and it is a meh for me.

Not enough to put dent in what I have to pay every year.

Even with the rebate cheque, rates are better in other provinces.

ICBC is all talk, and spinning BS, like all government run agencies. I almost died when someone going the other direction crossed the center line, hitting me head on. ICBC wanted to give me the tiniest settlement, until I hired a lawyer. Still didn't get what I should have, but got 45 times more than I would have without a lawyer. For what they offer back after an accident, they should only charge 69 cents a year.

That seems more of an insurance industry practice than ICBC-specific practice to me. Glad you made it out alive though!

ICBC seems to be a particularly bad insurance company though. ICBC would have been out of business a long time ago if not for being taxpayer funded. The NDP created an insurance company decades ago that is now irrelevant and can’t compete on a level field. But the NDP are now trying to save their sacred cow with no fault insurance. That only helps ICBC and the NDP

Seems they are doing the reputable thing by refunding some of our money. Pandemic has decreased the traffic substantially and net result the accidents are way down too.

My renewal rate is down $400 and got the same refunded too.

ICBC has been the insurer for nearly 50 years and numerous Socred/Liberal governments haven’t even tried to dismantle it. Time to give it a rest, they are here to stay.

Rather than go through the time and expense of sending out cheques why didn't they just give us a credit at the next renewal? If you stop driving before or at the next renewal then the cheque could be issued. Could have been way more efficient than sending out everyone a cheque. For the record, mine was $243.

I'm curious if insurance companies in BC are exempt from human rights investigations like they are in Manitoba.

Sorry to hear but glad you are okay now. If ICBC paid out what the claim is worth and keep lawyers out of it. We all be better off.

All things ICBC aside, my insurance did drop more than the 20% probably closer to 25%. And then just yesterday in the mail I received a cheque from ICBC. And I am thinking wow, they are actually giving back cash.
Then I opened it. And it was a cheque all right. For $5. Five Bucks. A Fiver. Cost them probably $60 to $70 to process that all in but hey I got a $5 rebate cheque from ICBC.
Woo Hoo!

This is the truth.

Had they offered me a decent amount to begin with, no lawyers would have been needed. But at least my lawyer is happy, she took 25% commission.

I have never seen people so miserable to have money back in their pockets. Think of the alternative: you don't get money back, this thread is not created, you carry on with your life with less money. Now, what's your preference?

Sure ICBC is far some perfect, but is this rebate a bad idea on their part? Someone please entertain me.

Agree with you. Got $214 from ICBC and I'm happy, that would cover about one session, once covid situation is better.

This past month a lot of the cars in our company car plan came due for insurance renewal so I asked for some feedback on costs. This may be meaningless as the insurance is based on the driver and in our firm we have a few folks who have racked up some points but for the most part for a relatively new 40-50K-ish car (SUV or station wagon) rates are pretty close across Canada (except for Quebec which is about half). Ontario though has a wrinkle in the policy where the car has to be insured. So you can't just cancel your insurance to let your car sit in your garage for a few months and for the 28 year old guy in our company, I was freaked when I saw what is being paid for his insurance as in $385 a month!

I don't know, not that I am an expert by any means but it seems to me, we in BC don't have it all that bad with ICBC. We can bitch and moan but hey, we are here and all the other guys are there so I chalk it up to part of being able to sit outside as I did last night with a couple of the neighbours (physically spaced of course) and enjoy one of my board cooked bbq'd salmons accompanied by quite a few beers. In the backyard. In shirt sleeves. In the middle of April.
