this isn't even that long ago, maybe only a little over five years but i miss when i could go to english bay at night and sit and listen to the water by myself no matter what time of year instead of the loud obnoxious fucks that populate it now at night.

I remember 5 cent ice cream cones at the Texan which was at the entrance to Stanley Park circa 1972. The Fraser Street Bridge (Draw Bridge), replaced by the Knight Street Bridge in 1974. Watching Earthquake at the Stanley Theater in Sensoround, and the old China Creek Bicycle track

I recall the fuckin' miserable rainy nights during the Joe Kapp to Willie Flemming circus days.

Memories of Joe Kapp. I am originally from Minnesota and remember the great days of Kapp with my Vikings in our first Superbowl (where we got our asses kicked by the Kansas City Chiefs). The receiver that Kapp threw his Hail Marys to here was Gene Washington. God, those were the days. We had this aged old backfield of Clint Jones, Oscar Reed, Dave Osborn, and this bow-legged old fullback named Bill Brown. The teams kicker was a dentist (really!) by the name of Fred Cox. Those were the early days of the defensive front line known as "The Purple People Eaters" - Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, Gary Larsen, and Hall of Famer and current MN Supreme Court justice, Alan Page.

Bigguy, thanks for the memories you brought back with the name Joe Kapp!

Those Vikings kept my Rams {then in LA} out of some Super Bowls.
The PPE were something else.

Oh, I remember. I freakin' loved your quarterback in those days. Roman Gabriel was tall and actually threw spirals. Kapp never threw a spiral pass his entire career. Well, maybe one or two, but they were both mistakes.

Yeah, the PPE were amazing, especially Eller and Page. Eller was big and slippery with huge hands. Page was so fast, maybe the fastest defensive lineman in NFL history. He was even League MVP one year.

I miss when Vancouver had the best stripper Bars around before private dancers, When headliners would come into town from all over the world.
Agreed... not that I particularly mind the way the peeler joints are nowadays, but back in the day, things were great. I can't remember now which bar it was at, but there used to be one where they had a fairly good looking busty waitress who would walk around offering "hooter shooters" from her ample cleavage...

ahhh... mammories... uhm.. I mean... memories... :D

1. The mall anchors were Eaton's & Woodward's, with Toys & Wheels as well.
2. Your biggest worry was choosing between a custom cougar and custom mustang in the stunt action set.
3. Ken Dryden as a rookie, winning against Boston after being down 5-1.
4. Salmon fishing in a row boat, & catching your limit.
5. The Village Chair.
6. The Stanley Park Causeway with no traffic lights over the lanes.
7. The view from the Lions on a clear day.
8. P J Burger & Sons adult milkshakes.
9. The Medieval Inn.
10. Porn was Playboy & Penthouse.

Memorable individuals

Does anyone remember that weird umbrella lady that used to walk around downtown in a beige raincoat holding a closed umbrella over her head? She got on the bus once, it took her about five minutes to get up the steps while she maneuvered that stupid umbrella between the posts for the handrails.
Another odd but not so creepy person was the guy who used to stand in front of the Bay on Georgia with his rosary and the picture of Jesus that changed as you tilted it.
And the native ladies on the mall who would knit a sweater or toque for you, I still have my Cowichan sweater 30 years later.

How about the Cascade Drive-In on Canada Way? Boy...memories of a couple doobies, a few gulps of Southern Comfort, and a knob polish from my buddy's sister while watching an Emmanuelle movie.

I don't know if this is the one you are referring to, but in the early Seventies, there was this lady who was crippled from the neck up who hung around Granville and Georgia. Her head was locked staring skyward, and I believe she carried an umbrella high, probably to keep the rain from blinding her as she strolled along. She must be pushing daisies now, as I would guess her age to be 70+ back then.

How about Stanley Park drive, smooth and free of the roller coaster bumps there now? What a fucking mess they've made of that Park...

That would be her, the umbrella was always closed and she carried it rain or shine.

Re: What I miss...

I miss.....

Peter's Icecream on Broadway with icecream floats with soda pop.

The hippies on 4th and Arbutus.

Skating on the road when we used to get cold winters and tonnes of snow so you could make igloos in the front yard.

Getting drunk with friends on the big boulevards and parks in Shaunessy.

Watching the Canuck before they were in the NHL.

Watching the Canucks even though they are still in the NHL That's coming soon.

Eating at the Texan at Denman and Georgia. It's long gone.

Renting bikes at the Stanley Park bus loop. It's long gone.

Going for dinner at the Bavarian Inn on Broadway with my folks and having the shnitsel and the waitresses had these cute Bavarian costumes on and I was pretty young and they looked yummy cause most of them were busting out all over. I think my Dad liked that place too. Mom always drank alot of wine when we went there.

Shopping at the old Woodwards with my Mom, and eating lunch at the counter above the shoe department.

Getting my picture taken with my brother and Santa Clause at the Bay. We could still do that but it would be kind of weird.

Candy bars for 9 cents at the Shoppers Those were good times.

My next door neighbor who was super duper cute and about ten years older than me and she used to lay out in her Mom and Dad's backyard in the summer time with her bikini on when I was about eight years old. God she was beautiful.

Swimming in the Mayor's backyard pool when his kid had a birthday party. That was a long time ago. But I did. Those were good times.

Riding our Mustang bikes with Banana seats and Harley forks through the "Dump" where the Arbutus Mall is now. And making secret forts. Those were good times.

Enuff already,

Later,
bobsled.

Good stuff bobsled...

Wasn't 7th Avenue called Chemical Road back then?

I also remember the Texan, and other bygones like: Don's Seafood Restaurant on Granville just off Robson, The Omelette & Cider Shoppe on Smythe with their amazing frappes, and who can forget the original White Spot Restaurant on Granville at 70th?

Woodwards was a neat place to shop, as was the old Eaton's.

Those girls imprinted a lust for Germanic type females that I can't get over.
But I never knew what any of the names of the food meant, one time I got a salad with blue cheese on it. Gak!
