Upon hearing the news today that Chretien was giving up the ghost on his court challenge to replace Justice Gomery, I was somewhat perplexed. After all, isn't the Shawinigan Strangler a self-professed street fighter who is not afraid of a fight and doesn't back down easily?

Why, after so much effort and noise, has he decided to back off now?

Is there something that we Canadians are missing here? Why does this just not fit?

I smell a rat.

Do you think they might have a fall guy lined up within the party that's going to appear before Gomery and fall on the sword. Take the blame and clear Chretien and Martin in one fell swoop.

Only question is who ... and how do you actually give that person a reward that would make it worth doing ... oh wait a minute ... big fucking envelopes of cash!!!????

Cretin probably tried the court challenge to shut down the inquiry before it got too far. Remember, this is the guy who shut down the Somalia inquiry half way(after causing the resignation of the military's Chief of Defence Staff, before the evidence of using the Airborne Regiment as human guinea pigs for an experimental malarial drug that is known to cause psychotic side effects.) He also was able to totally ignore the Golf course loan scandal, the lost $1 billion from the Human Resources department.

My guess, by withdrawing the court challenge(and the ensuing media coverage), Cretin is hoping the electorate will have the time to forget this mess before the next election (which, sadly, they probably will.)

I don't smell a rat...

I see a rat that is no longer trying to scramble out of a flooding sewer to avoid drowning in filth. With Stronach's defection and the recent win in Labrador's by-election, the Liberals are off the ropes, and they just don't need to fight as hard...they can coast for a few more years....

Unless Gomery can bring something to the surface that could cause Chretien to go to jail, then Chretien doesn't really have to worry about anything now...nor does Martin. This is Chretien's way of letting Gomery know that he's effectively fucked his asshole bloody: he states his contempt by showing he doesn't have to worry about him with their recent political triumphs...or he's too busy reaming Belinda to care about the inquiry now that MacKay's outta the picture ;)
