I remember when:

Oak street was a toll bridge,

There was a bridge across the Fraser river at the foot of Fraser street.
don't give the friggen politicians anymore ideas. if they have their way all the bridges will eventually be tolled.

It's true, they'll have to be. Right now only GEB is tolled, but then there'll be the new Port Mann, and then any replacment for Patullo. At that point the tax inequity across the region will require a rebalancing so that all structures with a replacement value over some specified amount will have to be tolled.

Metro also has done one think piece a few years ago on road pricing, but it's a concept that really only works on freeways or as a perimeter charge around a downtown core. Vancouver would balk at a congestion charge around the downtown core similar to London. and both Vancouver and Burnaby would be happy to support road pricing on the provincial freeways (1, 99, 91) since that will mainly impact South of Fraser residents. They will of course reject any suggestion that road pricing apply to major roads within the "Burrard Peninsula" and will probably resist any road pricing along those freeways that would impact their residents, that is, those headed to South of Fraser areas for work or heading out of the region on weekends.

I remember Capt. George's restaurant on Lougheed and Douglas Rd. in Burnaby, the drive-in theatres that were sprinkled around town, no Cambie St bridge, no Alex Fraser...you had to cross the Patullo....busses were painted brown and yellow, Sea Busses painted orange-ish, no Skytrain....Empire Stadium watching the Whitecaps and Lions in the rain...Monkeys in the Stanley Park zoo...

Ah, those monkeys!

We used to skip school and take the very unreliable Richmond buses downtown...we held mirrors up to the monkeys, against the wire cages...gawd they loved that!

No, it was actually built right on the edge of what became the sea wall. The ocean side of the sea wall.

It burned down in a suspicious manner when the city decided they didn't want it there anymore. It was occupied by seniors, so, nobody really cared, I guess.

I remember the English Bay cafe. A place with ordinary food.

I remember when there were still local neighborhood bakeries (European) around where I could get a decent loaf of bread or some nice pastries. Now I am stuck with having to get stuff at Safeway, IGA, Save On Foods or god help me Superstore

I remember when there was only one kind of beer in beer parlours, and it was very cheap and awful. You took turns buying rounds and told the waiter "have one yourself." Every now and then, for variety, you'd order a glass of tomato juice and then mix it with your beer. Tables were round and covered with red shag rugs, and everybody smoked cigarettes. Over one of the exterior doors was a "Ladies and Escorts" sign.

Damn, life in Vancouver sure got better -- except for the 35-cents a glass part.

i remember those bars!

i also remember when they changed the drinking age down to 19 from 21. all of a sudden there were these HORDES OF HOTTIES that could drink legally, so of course they asked us 'older' guys (who had been sneaking into the bars since we were 16!) to escort them on their first trip to one of those aforementioned bars. oh, of course, we said, glancing lewdly at our buddies, we'd be delighted to introduce you to our favourite bar!

ahh yes, candy was dandy, but liquor WAS quicker...

I remember the White Lunch! Great muffins!

Yeah, the Woodwards district was nice back then...remember the Xmas displays? We loved it when the folks parked at the top of the parking lot so we could look over the water.....always went to the butcher just along Hastings.

@tokugawa, I hear ya, the last "mom and pop" bakery closed around my place and we have the prefab stuff at price smart.

Ah, Jethro, you must be older than I am...our bags of chips were 15 cents and chocolate bars 10 and wagon wheels a nickel....good days for dentists :)

I remember when you took the new Skytrain to the Canada Pavilion, where were entertained by the Moose and Beaver Show while you waited to get in.
