Okay, so I just bought a lap-top right?

What I am looking to do, is move all of my files from my PC over to my lap-top. (My documents, pictures etc...)
I don't want to pay a programmer if it easy and I can do it myself.

Please keep in mind that my knowledge with computers is average.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance...

if it is a bit above average, you should know to do a backup of selected files,

if you don't .....

better pay somebody who knows what to do ....

they will:
- update your Windows
- make sure you have antivirus program ( maybe something more then JUST antivirus program )
- move more then just My Docs and pics .. how about your e-mails? Favorites?, etc.

We all have to pay for some outside services ..... :D

It depends how much data you are copying over. If the data is not very much (say <20GB), I would say just use a memory key and copy the data from the desktop the memory key, then copy it off from the memory key to the laptop. You will probably have to do this several times depending on the size of your memory key (this also assumes that you have a memory key, and that both your laptop and desktop have a USB 2.0 port).

If you have a lot of data (say more than 20 GB or so), the easiest way is probably to network the two computers together and copy the data over via the network. You will need a network hub/router and a network card in each of the two PCs.

Good luck. If none of what I said made any sense, you should probably enlist the help of the local nerd :).

go to 'control panel'
then 'network connections'

and create a network between your current computer and the laptop ... you can then transfer all the files etc from one to the other.

however, if it was my comp, I would clean install everything and put needed files on discs and avoid any junk going from one to the other.

and keep the old computer for internet stuff and the new one for private stuff.

If you've never done networking before, and don't want to experiment or learn how to do it, your best and easiest bet for transferring data might be an external USB hard drive.

I use mine to help friends out who need to move mass amounts of data from one PC to another, and are not networked or don't have the facility for it. When I'm not using the hard drive for this purpose, I use it to back up data on my own computers.

The only problem is that an 80Gb USB Hard Drive costs around $150, and a 160Gb drive will cost around $200. They are as easy to use as a memory stick, but hold much more data. It's a smart investment if you only have one computer, and after you move the data you want to use the drive to continually back up your data or to store memory hungry stuff like your porn collection, music, jpgs, mpgs, etc. It's real easy doing it this way, but keep in mind that if you have a lot of data to move, it will take a bit of time (best to let it run overnight).

If you have sensitive or highly personal data that you need to move, don't borrow a friend's drive to do the transfer. Even if you delete the data on the drive when you're done with it, it's still recoverable by those who know how.

If you plan on keeping your old computer to use as a storage backup, networking would be the way to go. Hope this helps.

I would just copy everything you want to move to DVD. The hardest part will be knowing where the folders are you want to copy are located.

Ditto to that. I'd burn my files on a CD if you don't have a DVD burner. I have a few computers littering my place, complete with a firewalled wireless network that I set up myself and some days if I'm feeling lazy I'll just burn a disk to move a bunch of files.

Best advice IMO. The DVDs will also be a back-up of your stuff.

First I’m going to assume that your laptop is brand new, therefore….the O/S is Windows XP

The question I have for your Desktop, does it have a DVD burner…..if it does, then we can try and back up the information and burn it onto a DVD (we have to keep the backup under 5 GB).

Second question is what O/S is on your Desktop, if it is Windows XP also….this will be VERY easy. All you need to do on your Desktop is

Hit “start”
Hit “All programs”
Hit “accessories”
Hit “system tools”
Hit “file and setting transfer”

It will ask if this is an old or new computer….hit “old” (from the desktop computer)
And when it ask where to save the transfer….save it in “C drive” and make a folder…call it “backup”

After the backup is complete….check the file size of the folder….make sure it’s under 4.7 GB or it will not fit onto a DVD.

If it is under the 4.7 GB, then burn it, and put the DVD into the laptop.

Now do the same thing as mentioned above but this time say this is the new computer, and then the computer will ask where the back up file is, hit “D drive” (I’m assuming that is the dvd rom on your lap top).

After this is all done, all your e-mail, favorites, and your e-mail setting, all your documents, photos will be transferred.

Good luck

It does make sense to me, I have some help offers already, and I wanted to see all of your responses first before I replied.

I was thinking of wiring them together because I have over 1200 music files, not to mention all of the other shit I have on there. I do have a file transfer wizard, and this program looks fairly easy to operate. I do have help enlisted as well. (Thanks guys... )

I do find it easier for me to delete than to save to disk. The Pc I have is being donated to a friend of mine from school. She knows what's goin' on with me, so I don't have to hide it. She does want some of my pics and music as well.

I was thinking of wiping out the OS and re-installing it for her and then re-transferring all over again. First things first.

I will be digging up this thread again when the time comes.

Thanks LG.:)

Nope, not an issue to me. the person I am giving this to has way less knowledge of this than I do. I am teaching her some basics now. :D

My fucking Itunes and back up folders are way too much! Same with the pics. I have a fair amount of memory because the person that gave this to me used it for saving his tattoo's. A direct transfer would be best at this point. I would have trouble locating some files. Thanks!!

I do have a burner... This is good advice. I may try both... Depends on which would give me less of a headache.:D

It did come with Windows XP Home as an OS. It was pre-installed.

I have way more than 4GB of data to transfer. Thanks for the step by step. I will need that.

I had a virus years ago and lost everything, now I burn all my files (laptop and desktop) to cd every couple of months. The thought of having my files backed up is very comforting and it makes it easier to switch files between systems.
It happened to me too! Too much porn and not enough protection. Sounds familiar? LAMO.

Had the whole thing wiped out and re-installed TWICE.

I didn't learn my lesson...;)

This was all very useful information and I thank you all for your insights.

Update...

My transfer is complete.

I did look into this further, and I ended up using a 2.0 flash drive. It worked out to be roughly 8GB.
DVD, or CD, would have taken 1000 floppies or 100 Cd's.

Direct transfer: HOURS I didn't have.

Seeing as I am a last minute procrastinating type, this worked into my ''NOW'' way of doing things.

Thanks guys.
