I held a door open for a janitor trying to enter with a cumbersome vacuum cleaner. He thanked me three times and seemed amazed it happened. He was Malaysian or Filipino. I think those cultures still carry politeness as an integral part of their culture. My tiny act delayed me all of three to five seconds and helped this guy. It cost me nothing. Why are these small acts of civility so hard to find nowadays?

most of the time when i open door for ppl, they thank me. but some rare times i have ppl scold me for doing it for them. these r esp women who get upset. they seems to think that they can do it themselves n don't need "help" from male. sigh...
I think that if you're going first, hold the door for whoever's behind you. Or hold the door for someone if they are carrying something, or if it's a pregnant woman.
I find it a bit akward when a man goes out of his way to hold a door open for me when I don't really need it. I don't get upset, but I feel pressured to smile and act all sweet and happy.

In CT's case I would have held the door too. I mean unless your on your way back to your BMW with your $5 coffee and your fukkin Motorola Razor with your head in yer ass you must be able to deduce that in less than 3 seconds this guys gonna be struggling like a whoer.

good to you all who open the door for others. i opened the door for one couple today that was pushing a baby stroller, the wife held the first door open and i held the second, then the wife followed through, they thanked me, but some dumbass loser quickly followed behind and stared blankly past me without even an acknowledgement.Rain Man said:

To me holding a door for anyone is an act of kindness. While I Lived in Toronto and many times I've held doors for young women (my female friends included) they would later open the door for themselves- is it a Toronto thing or a universal female thing?

At the moment I'm traveling in the southern US (slight sidebar...HOLY SHIT I'LL BE HAPPY TO GET HOME to that liberal paradise called Alberta.....if you (any Canadian outside of Alberta) think we're rednecks....you haven't seen shit!.....these fuckers are out of control with the race stereotypes and chicken fried everything....chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, chicken fried biscuits and gravy, hell I think they chicken fried my fucking coffee this morning.....but I digress) and its unreal how obvious the class system is.
When checking in at the hotel there was a frickin flurry of activity to open the car door, get my bags, escort me to the front desk, ask how my trip was (several times), get me checked in and give me my keys, explain to me that it may be raining later on, brief history of the hotel and area, walk me to my room (fuck...I guess I looked like I may get lost), someone else had already taken my bags to my room, once I got to my room (Michael, who I guess had become my man servant) proceeded to give me a tour of the room (like I couldn't find the crapper on my own), go through the contents of the honor bar and explain if I'd like a different selection of liquor of snacks/sundries they'd be happy to oblige, offer to get ice, newspaper, magazine, selection of CD's/DVD's, get my clothing pressed. CHRIST ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! After 20 or so minutes of this "attention" Michael finally finished up. I'm not a cheap dink and was more than ready to tip him (he was always very sincere and cheerful and IMO earned a couple of fins) but he refused saying that our hosts had already taken care of that. That said I still gave him $10 since he was awfully damn gracious about things. Now here's what I thought was rather obvious about "class" and perceived status.....everyone on the outside of the hotel (gardening, valet, bellman, etc) was black while everyone one the inside of the hotel (concereige, front desk, bell staff, Michael) was white. During the events today again it was very clear how someones race played a big part in what they did. Anyone who had contact with the guests were white while those responsible for the more menial tasks were black.

I hold doors open for everyone, and I can't recall a female ever getting upset or being rude because of it. I know women with very strong feminist views and none of them would consider it a problem if a guy held open a door. It isn't a man/woman thing - it's a people thing. I have had people not acknowledge it, but I still do it. Most will say a quick thanks.

I always hold doors open for people. As mentioned earlier it's simply good manners that we were once taught that seems to be lost on folks todcay especially young people.
If someone doesn't say "Thank You" after I hold the door open for them, I simply say, "You're Welcome" as they walk by. It makes people feel guilty as hell.

I think a large part of the problem is the pervasive attitude that if someone is nice or friendly, then they must want something. Unfortunately there's too many amway recruiters and con artists out there to give people this outlook. Try to think of it this way - unrewarded consideration for others is the most noble of all.
