this is for all you baseball fans out there.

texas rangers used to be a good ball club so they went out and paid huge dollars for a-rod!! and all the years he was there i dont believe they ever won their division and they just sucked. so they trade away their best player, the guy that was suppose to make them into a championship team, and now at mid-season the rangers are atop of their division!!! am i the only one that thinks athletes should get paid for what they are currently doing instead of getting paid according to their past and the good numbers they put up???

Ahh, great question 6nanaimo9. I think that the Rangers are overachieving this year and will come back down to earth during the second half of the season. Having said that they have young, exciting and (relatively) inexpensive players such as Alfonso Soriano, Hank Blalock, Mike Young and Mark Texeira. What they lack is starting pitching and that’s why I say they are overachieving, sooner or later guys like Kenny Rogers are going to come back down to earth. It’s possible that a few of them are having career years so you might have to wait till next year to see the plunge back down, however with the right mix of free agent signings and minor leaguer promotions they might have a chance to stay atop the standings.

Why do the Twins and Oakland A’s continually put up great seasons, usually make the playoffs and still have some of the lower payrolls in baseball? I highly recommend reading “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis. It’s a great book on the Oakland A’s and their general manager Billy Beane.

It’s interesting to note that spending money does not a champion make. Just ask the Baltimore Orioles, New York Rangers, LA Lakers, etc… I was also amused when the Seattle Mariners lost Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr. and A-Rod in consecutive years, yet were able to compile a better record each following season.

Basing a player’s salary on current performance might be a great idea, but would be virtually impossible to put into reality for team sports. Even if you use a system like the XFL where they all made the same base salary based on position with bonuses for winning, the question is how do you implement it into each sports current system taking into consideration players unions? I personally like watching golf knowing that if a golf pro misses a 12 ft birdie putt on the last hole to win the championship that he has no one to blame but himself. Conversely if he makes the putt he gets all the reward of title and money. I wish other team sports were similar, but I just can’t see how you would go about doing it.

Just my $0.02.:)

The only reason the Yankees got A-rod is so the Bosox couldn't get him. I would prefer Nomar anyways if he wasn't injury prone. Now if the Bosox got Randy Johnson, they may be able to battle the Yankees down to the wire.

Go Boston!
