It all depends on your perspective, and the convenience of readily available information at your fingertips. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. You can't watch a 60 inch screen eight inches away, just as you cannot watch a cell phone LCD from across the room.
Technology justifies itself over time, as applications are developed. Any machine is considered a novelty in its infancy - so are humans, by the way. When cars were first invented, they were derided as noisy, polluters that would fade in the sunset, and never replace the old reliable horse and buggy. Besides, you had to find petrol instead of just pulling your horse over for some free hay. When computers first came out, users would ask, "Why do I need a machine to draw a straight line for me, when I can pull out a pencil and ruler much quicker?" The same applied to talkies in film, and the airplane; they were just considered curiosities. One thing to remember, old folks are the first ones to criticize the arrival of new technologies - you know how the old saying goes, "back in the good old days, we did this, we did that...".
Watching TV on a two inch screen is a personal experience which is quite hard to justify today, or even share for that matter (it's difficult for two persons to enjoy it unless their heads are literally touching), but it will replace or adapt itself to people's changing needs eventually, as applications are developed for it. If not, something else will come along to replace it.
