Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). In other words putting hydrogen in your gas tank instead of gas or diesel... (yes there are some alterations that would be needed for a car to carry hydrogen).

Some of the pros and cons.

The biggest problem I thought they had was the temperature hydrogen burned at. Given the fact the more heat we have the more efficient the engine would be? Or is it?

An alternate would be a fuel cell. also with zero emmissions... Look up Elon Musk reasons why he thinks a rechargeable car battery is more efficient.

The efficiency comes from how the hydrogen is made and used.

Make electricity, the use a battery to store the energy; then it is discharged by driving the electric car. Most efficient but short on driving range for car.


Hydrogen by electricity: make electricity, use electricity to get hydrogen, store hydrogen, then use hydrogen in fuel cell, which creates electricity to drive car. Longer range for car than battery but not very efficient

Chemical production of Hydrogen, store hydrogen ,then use hydrogen in fuel cell, which creates electricity to drive car. More steps to produce the hydrogen so overall less efficient.

So for now its battery for electric cars unless a more efficient way comes up....(overall process of producing the energy to drive a electric car)

The biggest cons with hydrogen is the yield, energy density and storage. Yield is an issue since it's not as efficient/cheap to make compared to solar. Unlike hydrocarbons (dense molecule with carbon and hydrogen), hydrogen by itself doesn't yield as much energy. Storage is also an issue since hydrogen is one of the smallest molecules.

That's why hydrogen doesn't attract as much investment compared to other forms of alternative energy.
