I've heard that it's possible to pass HPV through oral sex and that HPV has been linked to some oral cancers.
Is there any evidence that supports these conclusions or is this just speculation? What is the actual risk of infection, if any.
Hi Aeiyah
There is growing evidence that certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) are strongly associated with certain mouth and throat cancers. They have also found that some of the HPV types that are causing trouble in the mouth are also the same types that are associated with cervical cancer in woman.
While doing this research some studies also found that oral sex and open-mouthed kissing were associated with the development of oral HPV infection.
This has scientist wondering if oral sex can increase someone's chance of getting certain types of mouth and throat cancers. Before anyone panics I just want to say that this research is still ongoing and will take awhile before they are able to make any strong conclusions. Currently we have not changed any of the recommendations we make about HPV.
If I get any new information I will let you know.
Some things to think about:
- Even if there ends up being a strong link it really depends on how common the oral cancer is in the first place. e.g. The cancers may not be that common.
- At our STI clinics genital warts (HPV) is common for us to see but we do not really see visible warts in the mouth.
